John Nelson (born June 8, 1948) is an American swimmer and olympic champion. He competed at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, where he received a gold medal in 4 × 200 m freestyle relay, and a bronze medal in 200 m freestyle.[1] He received a silver medal in 1500 m freestyle at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo.[2]

Nelson improved the world record on 400 m freestyle (long course) August 18, 1966 (4:11.8), but the record was beaten by Don Schollander the same day (4:11.6).
