John Charles McIntyre is the 11th and current Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Gippsland in south-east Victoria, Australia.
He was ordained as Bishop on 11 February 2006 and installed as Bishop of Gippsland at St Paul's Cathedral, Sale, on 18 February 2006. Prior to this, he was the Rector of South Sydney in the Anglican Diocese of Sydney for 15 years.
McIntyre is known to be an "alternative voice" [1] in the Anglican Church. Whilst working within the Sydney Diocese, he often took a stance against the more conservative attitudes of the higher authorities there, fighting for the ordination of women and homosexual rights within the church.
One of his main missions throughout his ministry has been to support the underprivileged, which is what drew him initially to urban ministry and which continues to influence his work as a bishop in the rural diocese of Gippsland. In particular, he has focused much of his energy on Indigenous Australians and has started new initiatives to benefit local Indigenous communities both within his previous community of Redfern and Waterloo and now in Gippsland.
