John McEntire

John McEntire (born April 9, 1970 in Portland, Oregon) is an American drummer and multi-instrumentalist. He is a member of post-rock outfits Tortoise, Gastr Del Sol, and The Sea and Cake. He was also a principal musician on Jim O'Rourke's Terminal Pharmacy and has appeared on many other solo O'Rourke projects. He has contributed on drums or other instruments for a number of other bands as well. These affiliations include Bastro, Red Krayola, Shrimp Boat, and Stereolab. He has sit in with many bands through the years and can be found on the following discs among many others: Since (1998) by Richard Buckner, Near-Life Experience by Come,and Kernel by Seam.
He is the owner of the Soma Electronic Music Studios in Chicago. McEntire attended Oberlin College, initially as a percussion major, eventually switching to study in the school's newly created program for Technology in Music and Related Arts. [1] John is an accomplished producer and engineer having mixed and remixed countless recordings by many artists. [2]
McEntire produces and engineers most of the recordings for his own bands, as well as many of the solo efforts by bandmates Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt, and Doug McCombs. He has also has engineered, produced, and/or mixed albums and tracks for many artists including: Bright Eyes, Tom Ze, The Ex, Smog, Eleventh Dream Day, Cougar, Antibalas, The For Carnation, Dianogah, U.S. Maple, Chicago Underground Duo, and The Fiery Furnaces. McEntire also produced the self-titled first release by Trans Am.
