Detective John McBain is a fictional character on the American daytime drama One Life To Live portrayed by Michael Easton since October 1, 2003.

[edit] Character history

An FBI agent, John came to town in October 2003 and involved Cristian Vega in an undercover operation. After Cristian married fiancee Natalie Buchanan, the couple headed to Las Vegas, where Cristian was killed by Walker "Flynn" Laurence. John became close to widow Natalie, who initially blamed John for Cris' death, but they eventually fell for each other. His relationship with Natalie thus complicated, John (now working for the Llanview Police Department), found comfort with local attorney Evangeline Williamson and they began to date.

John's estranged younger brother, Dr. Michael McBain, was also introduced in 2003. Michael eventually found love with (and married) Marcie Walsh.

In October 2004, just as John and Natalie's relationship solidified into friendship (and he and Evangeline had added "strings" to their relationship), a man looking exactly like Cristian turned up alive. Amnesiac Cristian, his identity in question, had been programmed in captivity to kill his brother, Antonio Vega; he resisted, but was eventually revealed to be the killer of evil Tico Santi, his maternal cousin, who had wreaked havoc for many of Cristian's loved ones. As memories of his former life began to return, Cristian accepted the consequences of his actions and went to jail. To help Natalie and his family move on, he pretended that he was, in fact, an impostor. John discovered the truth but Cristian swore him to secrecy.

Keeping Cristian's true identity from Natalie was difficult, as his feelings for her continued to linger in spite of his relationship with Evangeline. After Evangeline told him she loved him and he didn't say it back, she dumped him.

Eventually, John moved on to date Natalie, choosing to rescue her first instead of Evangeline, as Natalie was in more danger, when they were both kidnapped by the Killing Club Killer in June 2005. He still however felt guilt because he still knew Cristian's identity and didn't tell Natalie. This got even more complicated in the fall of 2005 when Evangeline became Cristian's lawyer in an attempt to get his prison sentence appealed (and discovered that he was indeed Cristian). In November 2005, a prison riot led by Carlo Hesser broke out and John and Cristian were caught in the crossfire. It was also then that Natalie discovered that Cristian was indeed Cristian. Although John and Cristian made it out alive, Natalie was angry for the both of them lying to her and dumped them.

As 2006 began, Natalie realized that she had fallen for John, thus officially divorcing Cristian. John became consumed with solving the decades-old murder of his father, police officer Thomas McBain. The unsolved crime had plagued John for years, but new evidence began to surface, which led to David Vickers, Dr. Paige Miller and ultimately, Dr. Spencer Truman. On the day of Spencer's arrest, John had finally found peace with his dad's death, and had asked his mother to give him her engagement ring (from his father) for Natalie. Suddenly, John was involved in a terrible car pile-up on the highway — he was killed, his body was burned beyond recognition. The town of Llanview mourned his death in early October 2006 and prayed that ADA Hugh Hughes (also in the accident) would survive. On November 10, 2006 it was revealed that Hugh, badly burned and bandaged in the hospital, was in fact John McBain. He ultimately recovered, aided by some tender loving care by Natalie Buchanan Vega. During his recovery he told Natalie that he loved her.

John later began to form a bond with Marty Saybrooke and her son Cole Thornhart. He eventually became good friends with them and helped Marty get out of her forced marriage to Miles Laurence.

On September 12, 2007, John was suspended from the police department, pending investigation into his role in withholding information about Tommy McBain's true parentage.

John along with Todd Manning left town to case after Marcie McBain who had skipped town after refusing to give back Todd Manning's child. John's all FBI rival Lee Ramsey was put on the case to catch Marcie and John wanted to find Marcie before he did as Ramsey was a very tough FBI agent. When John and Todd ended up in jail, Blair and Marty came down to bail them out and to join in the search for Marcie. After a long search, John tracked Marcie to New Orleans but they missed finding her. While at a hotel, Marty confessed to John that her husband, Patrick, had been murdered. John and Marty made love. John confessed to Marcie that Ramsey's animosity towards him came from Ramsey being in love with John's old girlfriend Caitlin. Ramsey blamed John for her death.

Unknown to Marty and John, Cole was being stalked by somebody wearing a death mask, the same person who had been stalking Marty on Halloween. The person in the mask confronted Cole in his apartment and forcfully kidnapped him. Later, Marty was kidnapped from New Orleans.

Marty's kidnapped was an Irish terrorist long wanted by the FBI. Ramsey and John went to Ireland to take down the terrorists and rescue Marty and Cole. John found an old poetry book by Patrick. Ramsey and John found the place where Marty and Cole were being kept but Marty and Cole had already been moved. John and Ramsey found the van and Marty and Cole but were captured by the Irish terrorists. John nagotiated with the leader, Simon. He claimed to have what they were looking for and would only give it to him if Marty and Cole were released. Simon agreed but John had to meet him some place else. Marty and Cole were driven off in a van until then.

John and Ramsey found the van; Ramsey shot it, and the van went off a cliff with Marty and Cole inside. Discovering an injured Marty in the wreckage, John promised her that he would be back for her after he found Cole. He was able to save Cole but could only watch as the van exploded. John and Cole then return to Llanview.
