Born in Manhattan, raised in the Bronx. His mother was a school aide and his father owned a shoe-repair shop.

Started at Rockland Community College, he transferred to the University at Albany in 1969. Graduated from the University at Albany with a B.S. in Business(Class of '71)

Van Heusen:Assistant merchandising manager
Joined Salant and Salant and quickly became the merchandising manager
In 1980 he became vice president of sales for Ralph Lauren Womensware.
In 1984 was appointed executive VP of merchandising for Calvin Klein Menswear. A few years later, from 1987-1994 he was president of the underwear, sportswear, and jeans divisions of Calvin Klein Industries.
In 1994 he became president of Calvin Klein's Men's and Women's Underwear and Calvin Klein Men's Accessories
