John Ira Burton High School is a small high school located in the City of Norton, Virginia which an enrollment of approximately 330 students. As a small city school, John I. Burton High School is a microcosm of any larger city school. However, Burton does not face many of the problems facing larger schools such as drugs and violence.
The School was built in 1953 and named in honor of John Ira Burton, who served as principal of the local schools for 38 years. The building is in a constant state of improvement with painting, remodeling, and cosmetic changes occurring. Teachers and the administration at Burton consistently strive to make the school and rooms attractive and conducive learning environments.
[edit] Athletics
The Raider Football team has made the state finals 3 years in a row from 2003-2006 but has come home with an upset every time. Despite having won state in 1972 the team was very close in the 2006 final against the Riverheads Gladiators with the score 21-20. The game would be marred with some controversy, specifically with an unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty against Ethan Stewart with less than a minute left on the clock in the 4th quarter after rushing in for a touchdown cutting the lead to one and backing the Raiders up on the ensuing failed two point attempt conversion. But despite all losses there are many wins for the team as well. The Raiders are 2007 Lonesome Pine District champions, and were Region D, Division 1 champions for the 2003-2006 seasons.
The Raider Volleyball team has made the Regional tournament 2 years in a row.
The John I. Burton Raider Marching Band has 74 members compared with 1 county school this number is more than triple their member size. The band usually competes in 2 local festivals a year. 2007 was a great marching season as the band has received Superior and Division 1 ratings as well as best in class AAA, Color Guard, Percussion and Drum major awards for both of their festivals this year. The band is widely recognized as one of the top marching band programs in the southwestern Virginia area, contending with other strong programs from the likes of Graham, Lee High, Marion, and Richlands. They are under the Direction of Mr. Bud Stewart.
