John Hammill

John Hammill (born October 14, 1875, Linden, Wisconsin; died April 6, 1936, Britt, Iowa) served three terms as a Republican Governor of Iowa from 1925-31.

Hammill earned a law degree from Iowa State University in 1897, and practiced law in Iowa. He was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1908, serving until 1913. From 1921-25, he was Lieutenant Governor, and then won three terms as Governor. He was a strong supporter of farm relief. Hammill did not run for reelection as Governor in 1930, choosing instead to run for the United States Senate; he lost in the Republican primary to Lester J. Dickinson. Governor John Hammill died on April 6, 1936, and was buried in Britt, Iowa.
