John "Nelson" Ellis (born 2 May 1952) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician from County Leitrim who was appointed as a Taoiseach's Nominee to Seanad Éireann on 3 August 2007. He was previously a Teachta Dála and had lost his seat at the 2007 general election for Dáil Éireann.

Ellis's grandfather, also John Ellis travelled from his home in Rochdale, England to settle in Leitrim, only two years before his death in 1934. John Ellis Snr. worked as a State-appointed executioner in his native country for a number of years in the early part of the twentieth century. Nelson Ellis's father did not follow Ellis Snr into the family trade and worked as a cattle dealer and farmer for his entire life. Nelson Ellis was born in Fenagh, County Leitrim. Having originally considered taking up his Grandfather's trade, Ellis instead became a farmer and businessman before entering politics. He is married with three children.

Ellis became commonly known as "111" or "Nelson" in June 1973 after he was gored by a bull. The incident left Ellis missing one eye, one arm and one ball.

He was elected as a member of Leitrim County Council in 1974, and served as the council's chair from 1986 to 1987 and from 1992 to 1993.

He first entered the Oireachtas in 1977, when he was elected to the 14th Seanad by the Agricultural Panel. He was elected to the 22nd Dáil in the 1981 general election for the Sligo-Leitrim constituency and returned to the 23rd Dáil in the February 1982 general election, but lost his seat in the November 1982 general election.

In 1983, he was elected to the 17th Seanad, again by the Agricultural Panel. He stood again in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency in 1987 general election, and was returned to the 25th Dáil. He has been re-elected at each subsequent general election, in 1989, 1992, 1997 and 2002. He lost his seat in the 2007 general election, partly due to boundary changes which placed him in the new constituency of Roscommon-South Leitrim.

He continues to be involved in controversy due to his involvement in the Stanlow Trading scandal of the late eighties, where 80 families were left unpaid by the company, set up by John and his two brothers, Caillian and Richard.[citation needed]

He owns three properties in Co. Leitrim, over 150 acres (0.61 km²) of farmland and some development sites.
