John Ebbetts

Major John Ebbetts (died 1854) was a California pioneer credited with the first recorded traverse of Ebbetts Pass in April of 1851 while searching for a route for the raliroad.[1] The route he took is now Highway 4.[2] He had come to California in 1849. He was the head of the Knickerbocker Exlopring Company. [3] He died August 15, 1854 in the boiler explosion of the steamship Secretary on San Pablo Bay. [4]
