John Christenbury (died July 1, 1944) was East Carolina Teachers College sixth head football coach. He was also the head basketball and baseball coach. He coached during the 1940-41 seasons. His 1941 team went 7-0. This is currently the only time an ECU team has gone undefeated. He finished his two years with a 12-3 record. He did not coach in 1942 because of the outbreak of World War II. The Christenbury Memorial Gymnasium was named in the honor of Coach Christenbury on January 6, 1953. Christenbury was killed in an explosion at Port Chicago, California on July 1, 1944. He was inducted into the ECU Hall of Fame in 1993.
