John Cabot University is a private, non-sectarian, American University established in the Trastevere quarter of Rome, Italy, in 1972. It was named after the Italian explorer Giovanni Caboto. Until 1998 the university was associated academically with Hiram College located in Hiram, Ohio.
Today JCU is an accredited independent university with American roots which offers both European and American degrees.
Its classes are taught in the English language but as a result of the university's location, it also offers Italian language courses. Fluency is generally expected by a student's junior year in order to apply for opportunities such as internships.

The main campus is situated near St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican City in the Trastevere quarter, with a fine-arts annex on the other side of the Tiber River.

John Cabot University confers the Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in Art History, Business Administration, Economics and Finance, English Literature, Humanistic Studies, International Affairs, Italian Studies, Communications, Marketing, History, Classical Studies and Political Science. There is also a two-year program leading to the Associate of Arts degree. In addition, students may choose to participate in the University of Wales Validation Program in Business Administration, Political Science and International Affairs. Students graduating in this program will receive both a John Cabot degree and an Honors degree from the University of Wales.

The faculty includes over 100 full and part-time professors from around the world. Most classes are relatively small and interactive; the language of instruction is English.

John Cabot students come from all over the world and from varied backgrounds. At any given time, approximately 50 different countries are represented and one may hear two dozen or so languages. Students also may participate in local community service.
Athletics teams are called the Gladiators.
[edit] Incorporation and accreditation
John Cabot University is incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in the State of Delaware and is licensed to award its degrees by the Delaware Department of Education. It is authorized by the Italian Ministry of Public Instruction to operate as a four-year American liberal arts college in Italy.
John Cabot University is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
John Cabot University's Board of Trustees appoints and directs the President who, in turn, manages the University. The chairman is Dr. Joseph H. Hagan of Rhode Island.

The university remains virtually unknown within the United States but is a popular and unique academic institution for the children of affluent members of Italian society; among its alumni, Valerio Morabito and Eleonora Brown, a 1982 graduate. It maintains a distinctly international character with a globally-educated faculty and student body from over 50 different countries. Due to these factors its degree programs in International Business and International Affairs are highly popular with students because of the real-world education the college's atmosphere provides in these fields.

Aside from its full time degree-seeking students the university also hosts a variety of study-abroad students from select colleges across the United States including: Marquette University, University of Denver, Tulane University, University of Arizona, Emory University, Michigan State University, Grand Valley State University, Villanova University, American University, University of Portland, Boston College, and the University of Notre Dame.
