[edit] High school career

Brantley is a polished, poised passer. He has nice size, a very live arm, is a smart guy, and plays with a lot of confidence. Although he has run a 4.58 40 yard dash, Brantley is considered a pocket passer, with his moblilty considered an area for improvement.[1] He is a very good play-action passer and deep-ball thrower, and his timing and touch downfield set him apart.

As a sophomore Brantley threw for 1,201 yards, 17 touchdowns and 1 interception, while sharing time with senior Seth Varnadore. In his junior year he threw for 2,835 yards, 41 touchdowns and 5 interceptions, leading Trinity Catholic to the Florida Class 2B state title. Following his stellar high school career, Brantley was invited to play in the 2007 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

[edit] College career

After a trip to Austin to see The University of Texas, Brantley committed to the Longhorns. In a later interview with FloridaFB.com, Brantley reiterated his commitment to Texas, stating that he felt it was "a real special thing to be headed out there (Texas)."

The other schools on Brantley's shortlist included Alabama, Louisville, Oklahoma and Florida.[2]

In December 2006, Rivals.com reported that Brantley would de-commit from Texas to follow in the footsteps of his father and uncle at the University of Florida. He later signed his letter of intent, and enrolled in Gainesville in 2007.

After enrolling in the fall of 2007, John Brantley performed very well in practice. Coach Urban Meyer even said that he was probably the best passer on the team.

[edit] Freshman Season

Redshirted his freshman season.

He decided with his father and coach Meyer to redshirt his freshman year. He did this in order to put on weight and so he could have more years of eligibility left after current Florida QB Tim Tebow graduates.

[edit] Redshirt Freshman Season

He is expected to compete with Cameron Newton for the backup job in the upcoming 2008 season.

Brantley, a redshirt freshman from Trinity Catholic, dislocated his left, non-throwing shoulder during mat drills earlier this week and his status for the start of spring practice (March 19) is uncertain, said his father, John Brantley Sr.

"Hopefully, he won't miss too much," the elder Brantley said. "They just don't know. They say he could miss the entire spring or a week or two or maybe even no time at all. We'll just have to wait and see."

John Brantley Sr. said his son's shoulder popped out of place and then popped back in, creating a bone chip in the socket.

"The good news is it's not his right shoulder," he said.

Brantley is expected to compete with sophomore Cameron Newton for the backup role behind Heisman winner Tim Tebow. UF coach Urban Meyer has said the plan is to play two quarterbacks this season, much like the Gators did in 2006 when Tebow had a package of plays playing in relief of Chris Leak.

Brantley has matured physically since he's been a UF, his father said.

"He's gotten bigger and stronger," John Brantley Sr. said. "He's almost 6-4 now and he's at about 210 pounds. He's really been coming on."[3]
