John Berry (cricketer)

John Berry was a first class cricketer who played 47 matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club and others in a long career which lasted 28 years from 1849 to 1867.
He was a right handed batsman and medium pace round arm bowler. In total he scored 1069 first class runs at 14.06 with a top score of 78 against Kent and another score of 51 against an All England XI. He took 40 wickets at just 10.62 with a best of 6 for 31 against Surrey.
He played 19 times for Yorkshire when they were still a pre county club and 18 times when formal county status had been achieved. He also played a match for Cambridgeshire and Yorkshire, one for England, 4 for the North of England, 3 for Sheffield and 1 for Yorkshire with Stockton-on-Tees. All these games had first class status.
He was born on January 10, 1823 in Dalton, Huddersfield and died on February 26, 1895 in Haslingden, Lancashire aged 72 years. His uncle, G. Berry, also played first class cricket.
