The Very Rev. Fr. John Berg, F.S.S.P. is the current and third Superior General of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. He was elected on 7 July 2006 by the General Chapter of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter at its mother house in Wigratzbad, Germany for a six-year term. An American citizen, Fr. Berg studied philosophy at Thomas Aquinas College and theology at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. He has worked in pastoral ministry and as a seminary professor.

On the one-year anniversary of Fr. Berg's election to Superior General, 7 July 2007, the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI issued the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum [1], reaffirming the essential place of the traditional liturgy that Fr. Berg and the Fraternity of St. Peter celebrate exclusively. The Motu Proprio states that the Missal of Blessed John XXIII may be used by all priests.

Up until his election to Superior General, Fr Berg frequently led boys camps and Domus Christiani in Sacramento and Concord, California USA, and gave spiritual talks to their members. He promotes spiritual education among his flock and is beloved for his dedication to the Church and her faithful. Following the model of St. John Bosco, Fr. Berg introduced sports to his youthful flock and thereby attracted them to the Faith.

[edit] Rite

Fr. Berg celebrates the Roman Rite in accordance with laws in force in 1962, in accordance with the charism of his society, the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. He offers the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in Latin (Low Mass, Sung Mass, or Solemn Mass). This is in accordance with the Motu Proprio released by Pope Benedict XVI in September 2007. This Mass (The Extraordinary form) of the Roman Catholic Rite is also celebrated by members of The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest and many other groups in communion with the Church.
