John Appold

John George Appold, FRS [1] (born on 14 April 1800; died on 31 August 1865), fur dyer and engineer, was a pioneer of the centrifugal pump: he introduced the curved vane, which he demonstrated at the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in 1851[2].
His design for a braking mechanism for laying ocean telegraph cables was incorporated in the first Transatlantic cable laid in 1857. He is commemorated with a memorial tablet inside St Leonard's, Shoreditch and buried at West Norwood Cemetery.
