John William Anglin (May 2, 1930 – c. June 11, 1962 or later) was an American criminal who escaped from Alcatraz along with his brother Clarence and Frank Morris on June 11, 1962 and then was never heard from again.
John with his brothers Clarence and Alfred were born in Donalsonville, Georgia. John and his brothers worked as laborers and farmers. The three brothers started to rob banks in Georgia and were arrested in 1956. John and Clarence were given 15-25 year sentences and were sent to Atlanta Penitentiary, Florida State Prison, and Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary. John and Clarence were then sent to Alcatraz for attempting escape from the state penitentiary. John Anglin arrived at Alcatraz on October 21, 1960 as Alcatraz inmate AZ1476 and his brother arrived on January 10, 1961 as Alcatraz inmate AZ1485.
By September, 1961, Frank Morris was planning an escape attempt and the Anglin brothers with car thief Allen West were a part of it. The escape was carried out on the night of June 11, 1962.
By late May of 1962, Morris, West, and the Anglins had finished cutting through the wall of their cells. On June 11 the escape began with Morris and the Anglins climbing up the ventilation shaft through one of the chimneys and reaching the top of the roof. The trio then climbed down the rooftop and paddled away on rubber rafts. The next morning police searched for the escapees on Alcatraz and Angel Island without success. In 1962 the three were put on the FBI's Most Wanted List. West did not make out of his cell and no charges were pressed against him.
In the 1979 Escape from Alcatraz movie John Anglin was played by Fred Ward.
It was suggested in Unsolved Mysteries that Frank Morris and Clarence Anglin did not survive, but John Anglin might have survived, because a day after the escape a man claiming to be John Anglin had called a lawyer in San Francisco and wanted the lawyer to arrange a meeting with the US Marshall's Office. When the lawyer refused to do this, the person hung up.
