John A. Peters (1822-1904)

John Andrew Peters (October 9, 1822 - April 2, 1904) was a U.S. Representative from Maine, uncle of John Andrew Peters.

Born in Ellsworth, Maine, Peters attended Gorham Academy, and graduated from Yale College in 1842, having studied law.

He was admitted to the bar in 1844 and commenced practice in Bangor, Maine, in 1844. He served as member of the State senate in 1862 and 1863. He served in the State house of representatives in 1864 and served as Attorney general of the State 1864-1866.

Peters was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth, Forty-first, and Forty-second Congresses (March 4, 1867-March 3, 1873), but declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1872. He served as judge of the supreme judicial court of Maine 1873-1883 and served as chief justice from 1883 until January 1, 1900, when he resigned.

He died in Bangor, Maine on April 2, 1904 and was interred in Mount Hope Cemetery.
