[edit] Greetings
Hi Joel,
There's a lot of work coming up w.r.t. the Whole Earth Catalog. I hope you will be able to help with it! +sj+ 06:23, 3 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Just ran into Stewart Brand at MIT today, thanked him for releasing copyright on the original texts. The imaegs are still mighty hard to run OCR on...
[edit] Aldous Huxley
Hi, saw you have been making a series of improvements to the Aldous Huxley entry. I'd be interested in hearing what you think of the pair of comments I made down the bottom of Talk:Aldous Huxley. I think the article gives the wrong impression in a couple points but don't really consider myself qualified to make that judgement definitively. Rkundalini
[edit] Pellet stove
Hi Joel,
I saw you put in the link to Pellet stove. I've raised a question about low-cost variations on Talk:Pellet_stove - in case you have anything to contribute. Cheers --Singkong2005 02:12, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Shoghi Effendi
Hi Joel Russ,
You recently contributed to the Shoghi Effendi article and added a statement about his connection with Richard St. Barbe Baker. Could you please add some kind of reference for the statement? I don't doubt that it's true, but it will likely be deleted without a reference, even if the reference is just an off-site link, or a book title. Cuñado - Talk 16:27, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Hi
Hi Joel, I must thank you instead. You did the brunt of the work improving the R. St. Barbe Baker article. He was indeed a great person. I definitely know that you were not trying to leave out the Baha'i Faith, as it still is a relatively obscure religion to most, so no worries.
It's wonderful that you are so active in trying to better the world we live in. I really wish we had more people who were more concerned with the environment. While, I'm not an environmentalist by profession, I do try to do my small part in helping the environment. I think, generally most Baha'is, are concerned with the environment and see the exploitation of our planetary natural resources as one of the symptoms of an overly materialistic society, that only considers short-term economic growth, and does not benefit all of humanity, and cannot concern itself with the long-term viability of life on earth.
Anwyas, thanks again for your great expansion of the article -- Jeff3000 18:09, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Sustainable Fisheries
Hi Joel. Regarding sustainable fisheries, there are few good examples in the world to point to and industrial fishing, with sein purse nets and long-lines are particularly damaging to the environment. The Australian government has been particularly concerned with the poaching of Patagonian tooth fish (see article at http://www.aad.gov.au/default.asp?casid=11981) and also with the taking of sharks fins, trochus shells and beche la mer (Sea cucumbers) by Indonesian craft, operating for Chinese syndicates in the north.
See the attached UPI article
Australia detains 200 Indonesian fishermen
PERTH, Australia, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Australia has detained more than 200 Indonesian fishermen caught poaching for shark fins for Chinese-owned companies, The Australian reported Thursday.
The fishermen are being held in a makeshift detention camp at the northwest port of Broome, the report said.
In the latest incident Tuesday, Australian Customs officers battled fishermen wielding knives and machetes, who set fire to their boat in an attempt to prevent the officers from boarding it. The officers found two holds full of shark fins and the carcasses of about 50 sharks.
The fishermen are paid around $45 a month by Chinese-owned fishing syndicates, and will likely have to pay for their lost boats on top of the fines they must pay Australia, a lawyer who is defending 15 fishermen told a Perth court Wednesday.
Legal Aid lawyer David McKenzie said each of his clients was their family's breadwinner, with up to seven children to support.
The men were fined between $1,500 and $5,000 by the court.
Australia initiated a crackdown on foreign fishing boats after news reports that they were coming closer to the northern coast, raising fears of disease as some crews were said to be setting up camp and bringing animals ashore.
To deal with these issues the Australian government have just tightened up the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) which means that the Australian Government can now play a stronger role in promoting ecologically sustainable management of fisheries and assessing their environmental performance. We have one of the few remaining sustainable fisheries on the planet.
This is partly due to the work in Australia of the very active Australian Marine Fisheries Conservation Society that play a very important role.
As for what is happening elsewhere I can remember reading that 17 of the 19 major world fisheries are collapsing through overfishing. Pretty grim.
Hope this helps

[edit] Re: Userbox
According to policy, we should move userboxes that did not say about language capabilities to User: namespace. I'm happy to see, that this solution has been copied from German Wikipedia, because I found it faster than other English Wikipedia users, and created my userboxes in Polish Wikipedia in User: namespace. It is good to us to not using Template: namespace, because it should not be used for POV templates. Hołek ҉ 16:10, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:SD Quintet.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:SD Quintet.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 17:09, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Renewable Energy Sites
What sort of information are you looking for? Basic research (5-10 years to fielding), piloting efforts (3-5 years to fielding), or full scale development renewable energy products? The field changes so fast right now that it's difficult to find one source of links. Are you interesting solar, biofuels, wind,...? Do you want information at a layman's level or engineer's? Assuming the former, here are some places to start, the first being narrative and general, and the second being a trove of places to look for more information; http://www.azsolarcenter.com/education/renewable011199.html http://www.uwsp.edu/CNR/wcee/keep/Renewable_Energy_Education/

P.S. Home Power magazine is a good source for determining how to power your home with solar, wind, micro-hydro, etc.

[edit] A new task force that could use your help!
Hi, Joel! A few editors are getting together to create a task force with the goal of making sure environmental records of corporations and politicians are accurately and efficiently represented in relevant entries. Given your interests, I thought I'd bring your attention to this project. If you think it's a good idea, please consider chiming in on the discussion page. We hope to have a task force page up soon and of course would love to have you involved!Benzocane 23:14, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

- Thanks, Joel, for your thoughts. We've made some progress getting the Task Force page up. We are more geared towards record keeping than the particulars of new technologies, but you might take a look all the same and see if it interests you. If you have any thoughts or advice at any point, of course it would be most welcome. Benzocane 20:22, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Peak oil
- TRUE Scary isn't it? Fifty years ago the world was consuming 4 billion barrels of oil per year and the average discovery was around 30 billion. Today we consume 30 billion barrels per year (84 million barrels of oil per day) and the discovery rate is now approaching 4 billion barrels of crude oil per year (11 million barrels of oil per day). 84/11 = 7.6 Kjell Aleklett The oil supply tsunami alert Energy Bulletin, April 25, 2005. The difference is being made up from draining known reserves (since production = consumption right now).
This is well oil - "crude". Unconventional oil is often in the form of tar sands and shale and to date still very difficult to extract. Consumption continues to go up because of developing nations and discovery of new oil is going down fast every year. Find some sources to disprove it.Kgrr 14:44, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Insulation question on Old Houses website
Hi Joel, Saw your question about adding insulation on another website. Since i couldn't sign-up to post a reply, thought i would give this route a try. Sounds to me like the routes you are considering are going to run into a greater expense than the potential reward (removing/reinstalling siding etc). I recently stumbled onto a product that you can apply yourself (like paint) to the interior side of the exterior walls. Testimonials state up to 40% savings on heating/cooling costs giving a huge return on investment. Coverage of the material is approx. 150 sq ft/gal at a cost of $65 ($0.44/sqft). As for R-value, the blue rigid sheets typically used behind siding only add R4(3/4" - $0.40/sqft material) to R8.1(1/5" - $0.78). The paintable type I've described doesn't give an R-value estimate but considering the 40% savings on heating costs in the testimonials it is plenty (best guess +R19). The product's website is www.industrial-nanotech.com/index.html As a contractor/"old- home" owner located in Connecticut I plan on using this product myself and suggesting it to my customers as well. Hope this helps. spamremedy2000@yahoo.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.182.210.245 (talk) 18:32, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Footnotes/Refernces
Hello Joel. A rather belated reply on referencing. I cannot give any definitive answer to your questions. It is difficult to juggle layout for best appearance with how to accurately give sources of info. In the article in question I went for appearance over accurate placement of references. I think that as long as the references are there and accurately quoted and analysed the job is done. I suspect the majority of WP readers want the info itself rather than the refs so I edit pages for the readers who are not chasing refs. Apparently there will be a Wikimedia revision that allows blocks of text to be easily referenced. It looks like something that would be impossible to achieve in printed material. -- Alan Liefting talk 06:07, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:M_Fukuoka.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:M_Fukuoka.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. PxMa 22:06, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Snyder_riprap_cvr.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Snyder_riprap_cvr.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Garion96 (talk) 12:02, 25 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Ecotopia Cover.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Ecotopia Cover.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 07:46, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:A Leopold bk cvr.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:A Leopold bk cvr.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. NotifyBot (talk) 13:11, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
