[edit] Biography

[edit] Childhood and upbringing

JoeyStarr had a difficult childhood, having been raised by his violent father until he turned 18. He was taken from his mother at age 5, and only saw her again after 18 years had passed. He tells of a time when his father killed an animal in front of him, and made him eat it. [2].
In 1985, he joins the military at Baden-Baden, "19 months of hell", an experience which he raps about in his album Authentik[2].
After the Army, he wandered the streets, sleeping in subways and alleys. He discovered drugs, but also hip-hop, and the latter changes his life.[3]

[edit] NTM

During his time on the streets, he met another aspiring rapper, Kool Shen, and in 1988 they formed the group NTM[4]. When the first single came out in 1989, he could not cash the check, as he could not produce an address or a bank account. The group achieved record sales with their 6 albums, but split in 1998, only to be reformed on March 13, 2008.[5]

[edit] Personal life

JoeyStarr had a very infamous romantic liaison with Beatrice Dalle, a French actress, and the couple appeared on TV shows and promotional events. Joey Starr has two sons, Mathis and Kalil, from his current girlfriend, Leïla Dixmier, a hip-hop journalist. [3] Joey also has had many problems with regards to violence. Indeed, he was first condemned in 1999 to two months of prison for physically harassing a stewardess [4]. He was also arrested in February 2001 on suspicion of being involved in drug trafficking. He again was condemned to one month in prison, the police having found some cocaine and a gun in his apartment[citation needed]. In 2003, in a now infamous TV moment, he hit a monkey on national television, and was condemned for animal brutality. He was heavily criticized in the press and by his fans.[5]
