[edit] The early years

Joey was born to Viki Lord Riley soon after the death of his father Joe Riley in 1979. When Viki later married Clint Buchanan in 1982, Clint adopted Joey and his older brother, Kevin Lord Riley.

[edit] Love and loss

In the 1990s, an adult Joey secretly romanced his mother's nemesis Dorian Cramer Lord. Though initially motivated by revenge against Viki, Dorian came to love Joey; Viki was outraged when she found out. During a recurrence of her dissociative identity disorder, one of Viki's alternate personalities, Jean Randolph, held Dorian hostage in a secret room beneath Llanfair. One of the conditions of her release was to end the relationship with Joey, which she did.

Joey later became involved with Dorian's niece, Kelly Cramer. Ultimately, Kelly left him for his brother Kevin.

In 2003 Joey returned to Llanview, and in a surprise twist had become a pastor in his absence. He soon married Jennifer Rappaport, but her struggle to fit into her new role as a pastor's wife and her feelings for Rex Balsom destroyed the marriage. Joey left town for London in January 2004. For two weeks that May, Joey was back in town while Viki underwent heart transplant surgery. He returned for two days in August 2007, along with brothers Cord Roberts and Kevin, for the funeral of his adopted grandfather, Asa Buchanan. He and Dorian discussed their past relationship, and the fact that they both still thought of each other.
