Joel Robert Rust (born 4 August 1989) is a musician and composer. He lives in London and studied composition with Jeffery Wilson at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Junior department before going on to read music at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.
He came first in the senior category (16 - 18 years) of the BBC PROMS/Guardian Young Composer Competition in 2007 with his woodwind and brass sextet 'Paraprosdokia'[1] which was said to be "more modest [than other entries] but it made no less impact". Professional composer Peter Wiegold was described as being "bowled over by the work's 'brilliant' opening" after hearing it.[2]
On 21 July 2007 his composition, for clarinet and sinfonietta, 'Bilingual' was performed by Mark Simpson in the Tate Modern. In late July 2007 he was commissioned by Latymer Upper School to compose a piece for the grand opening of their new Music School in April 2008.
