Joel Ekstrand (born 4 February 1989) is a football player at Helsingborgs IF. He is a central defender who can also play on the right back.
He made an unexpected first team debut for Helsingborgs IF in the first leg of the UEFA Cup Round of 32 against PSV Eindhoven at Philips Stadium, thus sliding in front of rivals Samir Beloufa and Leandro Castan in the competition for the open spot next to Oskar Rönningberg in the HIF central defense following Andreas Jakobssons retirement. Following an, after circumstances, excellent debut he retained his spot in the starting eleven for the second leg, where he once again had a good match until he had to go off at half time following a light injury.
Whether or not he will keep his spot in the starting eleven for the Allsvenskan however, is unsure, as sport director Jesper Jansson has stated in some interviews that the team needs someone more experienced between Rönningberg, who himself is only 21 years old. The team is looking outside the squad for this replacement and sidelined Wigan Athletic defender Andreas Granqvist might join on loan for the season. If not however, it seems as though Ekstrand might become a regular on the pitch, especially as Beloufa and Castan hasn't really impressed lately.
