Joseph V. Knox (February 3, 1924 – December 26, 2007) was mayor of Mooresville, North Carolina for 30 years, from 1969 to 1999. Joe Knox also fulfilled the roles of Town Commissioner, executive vice president of the Mooresville Chamber of Commerce and life member of the Mooresville Jaycees and president and member of the Mooresville Rotary Club. [1] Joe Knox first entered public office in 1959 with his election into the Mooresville town board of commissioners, a seat he held for 10 years. Knox was a partner in Knox Realty, once one of the largest real estate firms in the Lake Norman area from 1984 until 2001, until he formed Joe Knox Properties LLC. Knox was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine - the highest award given by the state of North Carolina - by Governor Jim Hunt. He was also named Mooresville's Citizen of the Year twice (1977 and 1990), and is a past recipient of the Jaycees' Distinguished Service Award.
Knox has also served as an officer or on the boards of a number of area organizations, including the Mooresville Public Library, the local board of Wachovia Bank, Lake Norman Regional Medical Center and the North Carolina League of Municipalities. Knox also served on Governor Hunt's committee to study the North Carolina Highway Patrol, and was appointed to a three-year term on the Governor's Crime Commission.[2] Joe Knox was most notable for leaving his mark on the town of Mooresville and the surrounding area, by helping transform Mooresville from a dying textile town to a center of business and important part of the NASCAR world.
