Joe Caputo

Joe Caputo was born in Carpino (FG) in the Gargano area of Apulia, Italy. He emigrated as a child to Brazil with his parents. Economic difficulties forced his family to migrate again to Australia.

[edit] Political Career in Australia:
In 1975 he joined the Australian Labor Party (ALP). From 1982 to 1989 he served as councillor and Mayor of the city of Brunswick (in Melbourne). In 2001 he was elected Mayor of the City of Moreland (in Melbourne). In the same year he was also elected Commissioner for Multicultural Affairs for the State of Victoria. He is also a member of the General Council of Apulians in the world. (Consiglio Generale dei Pugliesi nel Mondo). He is the co-founder with Lino Magnano of Laburisti Italiani in Australia (associated with both the Australian Labor Party and the Partito Socialista Italiano - Italian Socialist Party).

He is running for the Italian Parliament (Camera dei Deputati -Chamber of Deputies) in the coming April 2008 Elections as a candidate of the Partito Socialista Italiano - Boselli for the overseas electorate covering Africa, Asia and Oceania. His fellow candidate for the Senate is Lino Magnano. [1]
