Joe "Big Joe" Britt (1922-1982) was one of the wealthiest Godfathers of all time. He was responsible for organizinging the only California based Italian Mob. He was born in Palermo, Italy. At age fourteen, he moved to New Jersey. After about three years, he moved to New York, where he joined the five point star gang.
[edit] Career as a hired assassin
Eventually, he went to work for the most powerful mobster in New York, Lucky Luciano. Once in the mob, he was hired as a hitman. He served as a hit man for many years until Luciano's Death in 1962. After Luciano's death, he desired advancement, but Meyer Lansky, Luciano's childhood friend, did not hold Britt in high esteem. Feeling he needed a fresh start. he moved to California in 1964.

Once in California, he started The Southern California Syndicate. By 1968, he was one of the wealthiest of Godfathers. He amassed a worth of about $125 Million. He died In 1982 of a terminal illness.
