Re: Take a look (WP:Ala template)

Jody, Your modifications are working fine. You just needed to call your sandbox template correctly. You were still calling the live {{WikiProject Alabama}} template. I've done that myself a few times ;-) Вasil | talk 15:09, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Sure! Just copy everything (except the template call at the bottom) and overwrite the code in {{WikiProject Alabama}}. No need to rename. The code looks good! Вasil | talk 15:18, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Take a look here. Your original was a bit verbose and I added an auto-signature. Let me know. Вasil | talk 17:44, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

PS - What do you think about giving it a shorter name for usability? (e.g. - {{w-alabama}}) Вasil | talk 17:46, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

It's live as {{W-alabama}}. I botched the auto-sig, but it's working now with some help from Yonatan. Вasil | talk 13:36, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Hey there.

I saw your message at The Transhumanist's talk page. As a co-coach, welcome aboard. I've been a little lax in my activities, but as I see it, I aim to a) encourage potential admins to join the Virtual Classroom project and b) grill them there. As a coachee myself, I've been writing a lesson (almost complete) on Featured Articles and responding to questions. One of those questions, I've only just begun. It's a complex one about how I respond to RfAs, which I think is pertinent to some of your questions. Set yourself up with a section at the VC as a first step and fire off some probing questions / tasks at active participants as a second. --Dweller 11:07, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the visit! I'll set that section up ASAP. JodyB 11:16, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Re: Mobile, Alabama

Hi Jody! Thanks for the compliment. Personally, I'd like to see the culture section and or subsections populated a bit more. I'm currently working on a 'History of Mobile, Alabama' article and will condense the history section for the Mobile article. We still need a few more images. After that, I'd suggest we ask for a peer review, but we're getting close! As to your template question, I'm not sure what 'OR' template you're referring to. Give me another clue! Вasil | talk 14:22, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

My guess is the cornucopia of unsourced info! We need a lot of citations for the material. Almost every section needs referencing so it doesn't look like orignial research. Perhaps we could do some Internet searches and try to find references. I'm a Mobile native but currently reside in Boulder, CO. Вasil | talk 16:00, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Jhfireboy's RfA

Hello JodyB/Archives/2007/May, thank you for the recent constructive criticism in my recent RFA. Your opposition was not undeserved and therefore have compiled a list of things to do before having another RFA. If there is anything you think I have missed, please tell me.
  1. Concentrate on RfA, AIV, AN/I and XfD now, before I am an admin.
  2. Put more time in RC Patrolling.
  3. Try for an editor review in a few months time.
  4. Build my edit count (to at least 1,500 edits).
  5. Always place edit summaries. Now have edit summary warning turned on.
  6. Brush up on image rules.
  7. Try harder to get an admin coach.
  8. Help with more of the internal Wikipedia workings.
Jhfireboy I'm listening

Thanks!

Its not even that though, I clearly stated that I was trying to work with what little information I had, and that there are alot of other articles that have less information than the jack ferver article, but yet nobody touches them.

I dont want to make it sound like people are out to get me, because that'd be stupid, I just dont get how my article was the center for what seems like negitive attention.

but like I said, I dont really care anymore, and its really pointless for me to try to fight it, I'll leave it up to the admins. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anigra (talkcontribs) 11:42, 7 May 2007

IfD nominations

I noticed that you had nominated a couple of images at WP:IfD for not having source or licensing information. We have tags {{subst:nsd}} and {{subst:nld}} for those cases. It allows administrators to delete those images after a set amount of time without the need for the overhead of WP:IfD.

If you are interested in image issues, you may wish to check out the new Image Monitoring Group WikiProject, or install Howcheng's tool which provides quick and easy links on image pages to mark them for various offenses and notify the uploader. ~ BigrTex 15:54, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Please feel free to ask me whatever image questions you have. I do think it makes the most sense to just let the {{untagged}} tag stand if you can't add a tag to address the issue.
If an article doesn't meet the speedy criteria, then I {{prod}} it. If someone removes the prod, then I take it to WP:AfD. I see WP:IfD in the same way, if I can't add a tag to speedy the image — it has a source and license that I can't prove invalid, etc. — then I take it to WP:IfD. The Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion#Glossary is a pretty good list of the reasons that I take an image to IfD. ~ BigrTex 19:23, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Thank You

Thank you for reverting my page when it was blanked. —SpyMagician 19:13, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

No rationale

If an image was uploaded after May 4, 2006 and has a fair use license tag but no rationale, then you can mark it with {{subst:nrd}}. That will treat it similarly to {{subst:nsd}} and {{subst:nld}}.

If it was uploaded before May 4, 2006 you will need to take it to WP:IfD.

You can also choose to add your own rationale to the image. ~ BigrTex 20:39, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

I would accept it, but rationales are the weakest area of my image knowledge. I always use {{Non-free media rationale}} to structure my rationale so that when/if a fair use expert inspects it, they will at least recognize the structure.
I would recommend that you read Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline for more information on how to structure it. It also has a fairly active talk page if you want to ask questions.
Hope this helps some. ~ BigrTex 21:00, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Mobile, Alabama

Nice job you've been doing with the Mobile, Alabama article.  :-) One suggestion... though it's not a requirement, the source citation templates (like {{cite-web}} and {{cite-news}}) provide a standardized way to present and reference material throughout an article. I personally find them easier to manage when adding references... it's a little more tedious, but it's worth the effort. Thanks! /Blaxthos 18:55, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the comment. I "discovered" the two templates recently and have used them somewhere. But this morning I was in a hurry trying to get to the golf course and just did it the old way.. I appreciate the suggestion. JodyB talk 00:17, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Attic

In the light of the criticisms raised at the proposed Wikipedia:Soft deletion process, I have originally proposed a "Requests for viewing" process, which would run similarly to deletion review or articles for deletion. Then, Lambiam suggested that the articles for viewing should be placed on the subpage of the project, in which the community can improve the article. If the ideas were fused, it would compensate most (if not all) of the problems faced at Wikipedia:Soft deletion already. I'm wondering on your opinion on the matter... Sr13 20:27, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Me too. You are definitely ready. The Transhumanist    18:40, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Committed identity

I think you must have done something wrong, what you have there is just one word in hexadecimal, ie, 64 bits. Were you trying to use SHA-256? If so, your string should be four times longer than that. Where did you go to calculate it? I would advise, if you want to use PGP also, to just keep that separate from this (or, if you want, put your PGP public key fingerprint in your secret string). Mangojuicetalk 15:48, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, looks better now. I'm not sure what you did, but I think you might have inadvertently published an intermediate value from the hash computation. If that 64 bits was indeed an internal state of the hash function, it might be good if it was deleted from your history because that might not be so secure. Want me to do it? I'll restore all the other revisions of your userpage. Mangojuicetalk 15:52, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Enrique A. Pollack / Henry Pollack

I have asked to reinstall this article. I have rewritten it and sited additional sources and was hoping you would comment on it. Thanks Callelinea 00:07, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi thanks for your help. My newer version is back.. Could you please review it and post your comments on it.. Thanks..Callelinea 02:51, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

I just got your comments. I am unaware if you read Spanish but my second source.. http://www.cubaminrex.cu/CDH/60cdh/nota_prensa%20.htm.. is the protest letter that the Cuban government filed to the United Nations where it mentions Enrique A. Pollack and his actions. As far as the CAUSA problem. I guess it could be removed.. I know that at the time in 1994 it was mentioned a few times in The Miami Herald and the Diario De Las Americas (the local papers in South Florida) but I have yet to find out which days they appeared. Thanks for your imput. Callelinea 11:41, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

      • Alright here are some more articles. The first one is actually all about Mr. Pollack and the rest he shows up prominantly in them.. I searched them in a newspaper web search engine ( http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives) he was easy to find. These show the name of the newspaper, the date of the article, and the title of the article.
        • El Nuevo Herald - May 19, 2000 - HENRY POLLACK: VEHEMENCIA ALTERNATIVA
        • The Miami Herald - July 25, 2001 - E-MAIL VIRUS ARRIVES IN MESSAGE PURPORTEDLY FROM CUBA
        • The Miami Herald - August 25, 1998 - CUBAN MUSICIANS FACE PROTEST

WP:ABUSE

Hello! There is a current discussion whether WP:ABUSE should be automatically archived by a bot and use templates for archival requests. To view the discussion or to have your say, please see the WP:ABUSE talk page.

Also posted there: The person that is actioning on the particular report would have to add a template (either declined, etc.) to the request and it will then be read by the bot and archived to the correct place. Could someone also note what templates I would have to make and what is the process of actioning and archiving at the moment? Cheers! Extranet talk 21:55, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I sort of figured out that a project is a lot of work. I'm trying to use today's edits as a relaxation, sort of, to deal with different issues. With the templates, you simply add the corresponding template substitution (actioned or declined) to anywhere on the report, and the bot will find it, followed by archiving it to either actioned requests or rejected requests. I will update you two with any further questions I may have. Many thanks, Extranet is now E talk 22:05, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

R U ready, coach?

We've got another new student at the VC. I think this one will be a challenge. He failed a recent RfA due to his confrontational / combative approach , and he needs to simply let go of it as if he were answering phone calls on a crisis clinic line. I was trying to add something and messed up sorry. However I find Wikipedia to be a useless site now. You Censor facts because you may or may not agree with them. How many other "editors" Censor things they might not agree with. I guess the truth is revealed. Wikipedia is no better than the government or the media because the fact is, you display half-truths. Censoring is what people protest over but it's funny because Wikipedia is Censoring facts from being shown. Only displaying something that certain "editors" want displayed is Censoring. Plain and simple. I lost a lot of respect for Wikipedia and it's Editors.

I am sorry you feel that way but you blanked entire sections and failed to leave any edit summary so that others would know what you were doing. You also introduced gibberish and non-sensical text into the article. It appeared to be vandalism and I reverted it. Please see the diff here [1]. JodyB talk 17:48, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Re: Four articles I created that were speedily deleted

I logged on today to see on my talk page that four recent articles on members from the company Key had not only been nominated for speedy deletion by you, but by the time I logged on, they were already gone. I believe you may have acted unjustly as I asserted their importance as members of Key, which is a very notable and well-known visual novel company. I was attempting to expand on the notable members of the company, and two of the four articles you nominated were of the main staff. Not to mention that one of the other two was a member since the company formed (and has since left) and the fourth left Key to join Leaf, another very notable and well-known visual novel company. And now I see that you've nominated Nymphet (manga) and Kaworu Watashiya for deletion as well, even though the manga is by far very notable in its own right, and the creator of said manga is thus notable for said creation. All I'm saying is that I think you're taking this deletion business way out of hand, and your most recent nominations show this.-- 01:37, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

I did not delete the articles. I only marked them so that an admin could view them. The pages were 2 days old, had no assertion of notability and no references. Simply working for a company does not make the individual notable. You can seek to have them re-instated at WP:DRV. As for the Watashiya and Nymphet articles, I posted to AfD because I felt like the community should make that decision. I have no problem with you or the topics but we want, and I know you do also, this project to be the best. Again, I'm sorry you were disappointed. JodyB talk 01:44, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Pakistan-North Korea relations

Take a look at the article.I think I'm done on my part except I might need to insert the 2 countries support for Iran during the Iran-Iraq war if I can find the source.

(cross posted from Vmrgrsergr's talk page)

You're making progress here, that's for sure. I would make the following suggestions:
  1. Something needs to be fixed in the infobox, it doesn't look right.
  2. I have rewritten the lead paragraph to make it conform better to the Manual of style. You always want to use the name of the article at the very beginning.
  3. The section on scandal needs to be cited and sourced. Remember that anytime you make statements that could reflect negatively on someone you should make sure and document it.
  4. Continue to develop the article as you have time. It doesn't have to be done at once.

Keep up the good work! JodyB talk 12:07, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

You have a strong point. While I have provided a link to document the nuclear tests by Pyongyang the reason I added most sources in the external links is because most articles are written like that. However, if you wish to add direct sources or extre info that you have then go right ahead.Regards.-Vmrgrsergr 13:47, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
