Jody Wagner

Jody Wagner is currently Secretary of Finance in the Cabinet of Virginia Governor Tim Kaine.
She was born in Canton, Ohio, United States. Her educational background includes an undergraduate degree in economics from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and a law degree from Vanderbilt University. Following graduation from law school, she was admitted to the bar in Tennessee in 1980, and in Virginia in 1984. Prior to joining state government, she worked at a Norfolk law firm specializing in corporate, securities, and banking law for almost two decades. In 2000, she was the Democratic Party nominee in Virginia's 2nd congressional district, but was defeated by Republican State Senator Ed Schrock. In January, 2002, she was appointed State Treasurer of Virginia, an office within the Secretariat of Finance, serving under then-Governor Mark Warner. During her tenure as State Treasurer, she was elected President of the National Association of State Treasurers, but relinquished that post upon becoming Virginia Secretary of Finance in January, 2006. She was succeeded as State Treasurer by then-Deputy State Treasurer Braxton Powell.
