Joan Thor, R.N. was a fictional character in the short lived television comedy, E/R. She was played by actress Conchata Ferrell.

[edit] Undaunted head nurse

Joan was the head nurse in the emergency room at Clark Street Hospital, a fictional Chicago hospital. She oversaw the preliminary treatment, like taking temperatures, pulses, etc. Her assistant, and an efficient one at that, was Julie Williams.

Thor, as she was sometimes called, was married and had a family, mostly, she was on the phone talking to her couch potato husband, Bud. Yet, she was a firm and fair leader in her own right.

She was often concerned about Howard Sheinfeld who she felt wasn't eating properly, because most of the money he made working at the Emergency room went to pay alimony to two ex-wives.

She had Howard come over to eat with her and her family on occasion and this, along with working together for some time, allows them to be close friends.

She also has a nephew, Mark, nicknamed "Ace" (played by George Clooney) who also worked at the ER. (Mark, in fact, was the target of a crush by Howard's daughter, Jennifer) She found out, during one episode, that she had Hodgkins Disease, but before the show ended, it went into remission. Her rock of support at this time, besides her family, was Howard.

She worked well with Eve Sheridan, but chafed at some of her more strict outbursts, mainly with doing things that Eve felt she should have had to tell either her or Howard. Howard, however, knew Joan was doing her job, as he did his, and kept quiet, eventually Eve realized this too, and unbent a little.
