Joan Carol Clayton is a fictional character on the television show Girlfriends, and has been played by Tracee Ellis Ross since the show's inception in 2000.
Joan began as an attorney in a law firm in downtown Los Angeles, but became disillusioned with her career after failing to be granted a partnership, so she quit and started a Tapas restaurant called The J Spot.
Joan is perpetually unlucky in love, usually pushing men away, or irritating them with her three-month rule (dating a man for 3 months before first having sex with him). Joan dated best friend William Dent for a short period of time. The relationship did not last, but the two remain close friends.
