[edit] RfA thanks

I would like to thank you for your support of my recent successful RfA (muahaha I can delete the UNSW article now! They're so un-notable!). If you have any further comments or feedback for me, my door's open - don't hesistate to drop a note on my talk page. Happy editing! Enochlau 11:25, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

I'm not addicted *looks around*, well my edit count hasn't quite gotten 5 digits yet. Judging by what I've seen, it's traditional to thank people who support (or oppose as the case may be) your RfA for taking the time out to read through your nomination. See you around. Enochlau 13:29, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
Whoops, I didn't see the posts above, you've gotten many of these before :) It's Saturday night? Shhh, don't let anyone catch us out. Enochlau 13:38, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Creating watchlist automatically

Hi, Don't know if you have any thoughts about this but it seems worth asking. I'm running a bot creating a few hundred articles e.g. Arrondissement of Castelsarrasin and I'd like some way of automatically adding them to my watchlist. They all are of the form Arrondissement of ... - can you think of any way of doing that? If not, no problem - I can maybe do something with the bot code but it would be handy to be able to do it retrospectively in Javascript. Regards, Dlyons493 Talk 12:44, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your answer on Wikipedia:Help desk regarding section and supersection headings. I hadn't realized that "supersection" headings existed. [edit] ==Re: Fixing monobook.js for afd helper ==

Hi. You tried to install the afd helper, but it seems you copied the script at a time when some things had accidentally been capitalised, breaking the script. Please replace AFD_helper with afd_helper in your monobook.js. Thanks and enjoy! jnothman talk 22:25, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

I just fixed that but still have the same problem. None of the scripts seems to be working. WAvegetarian (talk) (email) (contribs) 22:35, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] recent items-december-12-13

If you have my reference to a railroad "stub" turnout-I noticed a stub article reference on your site-this is a lingual problem-multiple definition of terms-My 1959 websters collegiate dictionary had an almost continuous systematic four definitions as an average thru-out the text where ever there was any multiple(more than one definition)I have concluded that universal data systems originate from a source electronic storage which was damged,or suffered a componant failure(some particular circuit or module)resulting in so to speak salvaging by substituting near but not exact meanings. The word take in my 1947 webster unabridged has over 50 definitions following the first.(may be relative to idea of "mistake")Foul is close to four-one begins to swear-(obscenities)What may happen is a data failure-the individual has become the victim of cross purposes in the system. Many times I have found myself working with tools, partcularly, and had to give up.I would go back into the house and sit down and try to figure out better ways of accomplishing the task.I would either remember a better method,or,on creative days, concieve of one.If one of these solutions did not occur,I would consider the job unecessary.Sometimes dats or a week would pass, and a solution would pop into my brain. These tasks were usually small dream jobs in my workshop.I have since relegated anything important to the factory.(buy a new one)Rhyme swear with wear-The letter of the law-In fact,I finally discarded a 20 volume do-it-yourself encyclopedia out of disgust.Do what yourself? No man is an Island-True fact-In a time is no object world more would be possible-Time has a value-I saved one or two volumes of the encyclopedia for crypt value, which was the only value that remained-The article was on a page with a garden pathway curvature resembling a type of railway curve, with a number according to my own code observation, railroad related. This being an image, then must go to a graphics mode somewhere.Division,thoughts,images-data overlaps in an image system-something errant in a central cyber index-and/or something missing-The entire code track or path I have found puts references for apple pie,on occasion,in Chilton's auto repair manual-There is confusion in the world-One item for main page "Kadee"-In model railroading,Kadee is a special coupler manufacturer.Adress-720 grape street-medford-oregon.Somewhere in central America,(from a national geographic article)there is a bird named the Kiskadee-The article says that the bird makes it's nest from dried or shedded snake skins-This may be close co-operation between bird and snake-Thus,plane and train-I have installed probably a hundred of the very small couplers on ho scale models-they approach the real thing in function and appearance-they do not come standard on the majority of models;which use only a simple hook arrangement-Without exception, the smaller the scale model, the les working parts it has.Deletions and substitutions are utilized-Speculation-Lexicon-Mexican-aztec-A to z technology-Mex-Mix-Where a universal language could have disappeared-Mexico and south-?I spotted the personal name Kadee and had to put this in-Maybe you can make something of it-A value in 12 ounce locomotives-model or module?

I assume this user is the same as Carl helsing who has twice posted on my talk page material of a similar genre. I still do not get it. If anyone ever sees this, can they give me any idea on what this is asking me to do, if anything? It seems strangely too cohesive to be computer generated. jnothman talk 22:31, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
Looks computer-generated to me, probably seeded with words from your talk page or links from it. --LesleyW 22:47, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
I'm quite sure it's not computer generated: after I deleted the first posting from Carl on this talk page and left a note on his talk page, saying, "I didn't understand your message. Or any of your contributions to wikipedia. Please be more coherent."; I received the responses above, which both claims that the responses are typed, and responds directly to my deletion of the first post and comment on the user's talk page.
I further don't think that this could be seeded from stuff on my talk page, nor that with that number of errors, and that amount of seeming coherence, this could be computer generated. But it is nonsense, or psychosis. jnothman talk 23:15, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
I agree it's nonsense. I'm somewhat intrigued, and have been poking around contribs etc. I'm less convinced than I was, but I still think it could be a clever bot, perhaps in conjunction with its creator who's probably sitting out there laughing at us. There are some smart people out there doing AI linguistic stuff (see Turing test and related pages). Some of it looks very stream-of-consciousness and it wouldn't be hard to simulate that by following random links and taking bits of text on the way - the cleverness would be in selecting the bits and joining them together but I imagine it can be done by those who have the time and inclination. If there is no bot involved, then the user is one very, er, unusual individual. --LesleyW 03:45, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

BTW, perhaps it is time to take the default-"minor edit" option off? [edit] Re talk page note on Palestinian exodus

Dear J,

As you suggest in your message, what seems "neutral" to one person is far from being "neutral" in the eyes of another. The sections that I edited appeared to me to be very biased and I made modifications that made the picture more even-handed. It is somewhat odd that you would presume to determine that what I wrote was more biased than what you have written before me (and after). It was also quite unpleasant to read the implicit threats in your message - it seemed as if you were suggesting that unless people adhere to your perception of neutrality, there's no room for their input in Wikipedia.

[edit] Barghouti

Hi there,

I'm afraid I don't quite follow your argument, which is probably because it is very late and I have been struggling for some hours with the translation of a fiendishly obscure article about early Persians (alas, I have to earn a living as well). To be honest, it was the appearance of the word "irony" that set my alarm bells ringing. Feel free to fix it as you see fit, if I am any closer to being sentient tomorrow I will look at it again (but are you saying that the parallel is yours? and if so, would that not be a violation of our sacrosanct ban on original research?). Thanks for the note, in any case. Palmiro | Talk 02:07, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

i read your comment on the GH avisualagency AfD page and saw that you have extensive experience on here. i am trying to contribute to the GH article but everyone on the discussion page keeps giving me the wrong advice. most insisted that i have to prove notability, then they said that it was wrong to list articles about the collective. i don't know who to believe as they all keep leading me astray. if you could please offer me any advice on how to make the article better or make any adjustments yourself i would sincerely appreciate it. even if it does get deleted, at least i will have known that i tried my hardest to make it the best i could given the limited time frame. thanks so much.

That US expression is from, oh, the 1960s. Which reminds me of a story. My wife was in a shop in Sydney and the assistant said, "You're American, aren't you? I love the American accent!" This FAC is being opposed by a POV pusher who has consistantly tried to downplay Jewish contributions to history (while simultaneously shrugging off or sweeping under the rug Muslim atrocities against Jews and others, see, e.g., al-Andalus and Banu Qurayza). Please review the article when you are able and weigh in on the FAC page as you feel appropriate. Briangotts (Talk) (Contrib) 05:57, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] A second opinion

Hey there... Wikipedia can sometimes be a bitter battleground. If I may ask of you a favour, would you be able to take a look at Talk:Chinese New Years greetings (the "move" section) and see whether I'm horribly incorrect in saying that the merge from Kung Hei Fat Choi (moved to Chinese New Years greetings) into Chinese New Year was horribly wrong and should not have happened? Me and another user (User:Novacatz) are starting to become a little wearied at the constant argument, which has at times degenerated into personal attacks by the other parties. I'm considering a WP:RfC but it would be good to get a second opinion on the matter first. Many thanks! enochlau (talk) 06:44, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Ma Tovu

I saw you edited the talkpage so you may be able to answer my question;is this the only version of Ma Tovu? The one I'm familiar with begins with something along the lines of: "Maaaaa Tovuuuu u-ma-na-heemmmm shevhet taseem gam-ya-had." Which is not the version shown...freestylefrappe 20:16, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Your talk page is protected, so I can't respond there till probably tomorrow night. Ma Tovu is a prayer recited upon entering the synagogue. What you refer to is a song known as "Hine ma tov" (note, no u). It is a verse from Psalms (133:1),
Hine ma tov uma naʻim, shevet achim gam yachad
But, at least near me, this is often pronounced as:
Hine ma tov umanaayiim, shevet achim gamyaachad
Anyway, it's a popular song and means
"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" (JPS 1917)
It's therefore sung often at occasions where people come together, and is also very common at interfaith events. I'm not sure, though, that it would deserve its own Wikipedia article. jnothman talk 12:35, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Hello. I've read your note and i'd like you to put this information back again. I've translated this movement's goals as they are in Hebrew. So here i'll just fix the mistake for the begining.

The movement's goals:

1. To be an adolescent who sees the human being and his happiness as the central foundation of his creation and lives by this belief.

2. To be an adolescent who stands for democratic and socialist principles.

3. To be an adolescent who sees in the Jewish tradition a source of inspiration and influence, not a source of authority.

4. To be an adolescent whose own responsibility and criticism are the foundations of his life conception and life-style's consolidation.

5. To be an adolescent who bases his material and cultural existence on his own creation.

6. To be an adolescent who is involved and active in social changing processes led by his beliefs and concepts.

7. To be an adolescent whose ambition is to live in the state of Israel and takes part in its defense and building.

8. To be an adolescent whose ambition is to live in a Kibbutz or in any other socialist and cooperative way of living.

thank you.

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those.
