[edit] Single-game college football articles

Hey JK, I'm heading out of the house so I can't type a long reply. I'll look at the style guide you wrote in more detail later, but at first glance it looks great. I see your point on the text version of the stats section. I think in time I can do that, but for now just getting the basic numbers in place is a plus. There's tons of things I want to improve/expand/create in the world of college football. So far, I've created 9 of the team 2008 season articles. I hope to make the remaining ones in the coming weeks. Later, Rocketmaniac RT 12:12, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Perhaps this is something for the college football wikiproject newsletter

I have finished putting together templates for each state listing their college football venues (except for Alaska which has no college football venues and Wyoming that has only one that I could find). These are available at Category:American college football venue navigational boxes by state. They reflect info for the upcoming 2008 season. Hopefully, these will spur the creation and expansion of college football stadia articles beyond the fbs and fcs levels. Gwguffey (talk) 08:07, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 1996 Orange Bowl

Here's one for you - there were two 1996 Orange Bowls. One of them - the one we played in -, was on December 31, 1996. That article is at 1997 Orange Bowl, though it is a misnomer - there was no 1997 Orange Bowl. The other, played on January 1, 1996, is at 1996 Orange Bowl. Any thoughts on how to name them? Leave it as is? Move one to 1996 Orange Bowl (January) and the other to 1996 Orange Bowl (December) and put a dab page at 1996 Orange Bowl? --B (talk) 05:33, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

I had an idea for the newsletter. You could include of the past/future selected Portal images to include with it. Since they're free it's okay. Just to highlight some more work and perhaps encourage others to take images and upload them (to Commons!). Could you also put in a reminder for the April newsletter to take images at Spring games which would be upcomming in 1-3 weeks at the time? Thanks again. MECUtalk 21:13, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
Hello, thanks for the review of 2007 Texas Longhorn football team. I have started addressing the issues you point out and I will make more changes over the next few days. Best, Johntex\talk 07:27, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Hi JK, thanks for your message. I still plan to make more significant changes, its just that I had a lot of off-wiki work this week. My Saturday will also be busy, but I hope to dive in on Sunday, do a thorough copy-edit, and look for facts that can be split out. I plan to do that with some sub-articles. Johntex\talk 08:55, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, I don't know about me being a Wikipedia expert, but I appreciate the support! I think you have a good point that taking on too much at once is detrimental. In the short-term, I am mainly thinking about an independent article of the player suspensions, leaving a summary in the main article. I am also thinking I may have to create something new for the Arkansas State Indians or Wolves or whatever you want to call them. They are not well covered on Wikipedia yet so I don't think there is an existing article that would make sense for that info. Johntex\talk 09:20, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

...that the 2007 Texas football suspensions involved seven players, including one of the highest-ranking recruits for the Texas Longhorns college football team?

  • I also tried to re-write the Arkansas State section to better explain the parallels between the two teams and the relevance of the events around the time of the game. I think it is a lot better but I will read it again with fresh eyes. Gotta get some zzzzs now. Johntex\talk 10:38, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tyrone Wheatley editing

I have some real problems with the changes you made to the Tyrone Wheatley WP:LEAD. First look at this months Good Article Newsletter below. Notably, a lead is suppose to contain all important points in the first paragraph. You do not mention any college or professional successes in the first paragraph as you edited it. You remove numerous important points from the lead entirely. I.e. first team All-Big Ten on Big Ten Champs. Athlete of the year in two sports. Basically, you turned him into a mundane athlete with your changes. I would rather you revisit your changes with the newsletter below in mind than go through a reversion war.

Additionally, you may not have noticed but the article had been in the format where the first paragraph summarized the whole article and the next three expanded further. Please revisit your edits because some of then are good.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 21:38, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

What I am saying is that I had hoped to get your input into how to summarize all important points in the first paragraph. I will partially revert if you don't make any edits in the next two hours.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 23:24, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
It seems like it will take me a sec to find some good ones. The first two I stumbled upon (I am working on Presidential stuff at the moment) were Featured articleFranklin D. Roosevelt and Featured articleTheodore Roosevelt who both violate the rule that a lead can only be four paragraphs. Then Featured articleRonald Reagan only uses three for a Presidential FA. O.K. I am going to look for some athletes. Featured articleTim Duncan, Featured articleJoe Sakic, Featured articleWayne Gretzky don't use four paragraphs. Featured articleMichael Jordon's lead only talks about his pro career. Featured articleDominik Hašek is still active so his story is not complete as an athlete although he uses four paragraphs. Featured articleBill Russell is sort of close. It really does not look like most leads follow the guidelines. Let's just look at what a lead is suppose to do. Do you think the first paragraph now or the old version better point out the important highlights of his career? It is no longer clear in the first paragraph why his bio claims he is one of the greatest high school and college athletes from Detroit. At the least, we need to revert enough info to clarify this in the first paragraph. Then we need to revert enough info to say how good he was as a pro and what he is currently doing.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 23:44, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
I think you missed the point. Now the first paragraph, as you edited (and I left basically untouched) is devoid of content explaining his college and professional success. See my original paragraph at the top of this section. Adding weasel words like one of the best to support the claim that he is one of the greatest in Detroit history doesn't quite work.
O.K. There are two facts that have been removed from the lead.
  • He was state high school athlete of the year in two sports. I think this is an extraordinary accomplishment and should be in the lead in a clear way.
  • The article says he was All-Big Ten several times and won several Big Ten Championships. However, it does not say that he was All-Big Ten on Big Ten Champions in both sports anymore. I think this is fairly important. What do you think?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 23:49, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
I made some minor edits. I am sure as a sports fan it is much more meaningful to have been a "a first-team All-Big Ten Conference athlete on Big Ten Team Champions in both football and track." than "earned multiple All-Big Ten awards in both football and track." which many more athletes have done. Let me know if you have any problem with this group of edits.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 02:35, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Did You Know

... that the 2007 Texas vs. Oklahoma State football game featured the largest fourth-quarter comeback in Texas Longhorn history?

Hello, I have attempted to address all your points from the GA Review and I'd appreciate it if you could take a new look at the main article. Thanks! Johntex\talk 07:51, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello, thanks for taking a new look. I fixed that reference; thanks for catching that.
The "Texas Longhorn" vs "Texas Longhorns" bit is a little trickier. UT actually uses both forms, as does the media. The form with the "s" would typically be preferred as a noun for instance: "The Texas Longhorns lost the game". Either form gets used as an adjective, however, "The Texas Longhorn season includes some tough games.", "Colt came in as the Longhorn quarterback.", "The Texas Longhorns passing attack was effective", etc. I think that the adjective form is more likely to be without the "s".
For instance, please look at these official UT pages without the "s" pertaining to a range of topics: general athletics,[1] the school band,[2] Racquetball[3], and football.[4]
We actually discussed this in the UT WikiProject a long time ago and decided that since the school uses both games, that we would as well. The 2005 Texas Longhorn football team article started out without the "s" - that was before the CFB WikiProject ever existed. It made it to FA status with that name. All the UT season articles use that convention. I know most teams under the CFB project use an "s", but I don't think that has ever been codified in a style-guide or anything. It doesn't seem to be an issue for most schools like it is for UT.
Therefore, I think the best thing to do is to continue to allow both usages. Johntex\talk 01:21, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. I tried to proof-read very thoroughly, but I am sure I must have missed a non-breaking space or misspelled Longhorn or ... Probably all of the above! Best, Johntex\talk 02:18, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Hello again, and thanks for your hard work in doing a thorough review. Your changes to the lead look very good to me; I think it would be great if you have time to go through the rest of the article. As you have surmised, I do want to take this to FA at the appropriate time. What do you think are the main things needed to bring it from GA status to FA status? Best, Johntex\talk 15:09, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 2005 ACC Championship Game FAC

The only license that really “fits” would be {{Non-free fair use in}}. My concern, however, with using a Fair Use license here would be “conflict” with Image:ACCChampgame.gif. WP:NFCC#3A says “As few non-free content uses as possible are included in each article and in Wikipedia as a whole” and NFCC#8 requires an image significantly contribute to our understanding. As the logo is already present in the other image, I’m not sure the tickets contribute significantly above the contribution already made by the logo (i.e. the logo portion is duplicated, and we all know what tickets look like). Unless you think you can make a case that a lack of the ticket image would be a detriment to our understanding of the 2005 ACC Championship Game, the image should probably be removed. ЭLСОВВОLД talk 01:45, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

I’ll try to take a look at it today or tomorrow (real life has a habit of barging in whenever I give specific timeframes). ЭLСОВВОLД talk 14:26, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, it looks like it didn't make it this time around. Would you still like me to have a look at it and enter comments on the talk page, or would you rather I wait until when/if it is renominated? ЭLСОВВОLД talk 01:04, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

JK, please take some time to get feedback to determine why the article garnered no support the first time through before re-nomming right away. The group listed at WP:PRV might be useful. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 04:09, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

JKBrooks85, note that Karanacs expressed copyedit concerns; please take time to work this through before re-nomming. Thanks, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 04:17, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

I don't know why it happens, JKBrooks85, but when an article runs for two weeks and garners no support, but there are concerns expressed about copyedit needs, it's an indication you may want to seek out others to review. I have noticed that when American football articles come to FAC, you all don't seem to pitch in and help each other out and review and check each other's articles, which may be part of the problem (that there isn't an organized group to help check each other's work). At any rate, in this case, you do have some copyedit concerns you can work on, and I see that Elcobbola (above) has also offered to help. You can also consult WP:PRV to see if you can find someone who will take a look. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 04:20, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

I've noticed little feedback on other American football articles. Perhaps if you reviewed more articles for others, they'd also review for you? I really don't understand the weakness of the American football group, or why you don't review for each other when articles come to FAC. Again, I suggest seeking out someone from WP:PRV to try to determine why the articles aren't garnering support; could be copyedit, flow, jargon, a number of things. I'm sure the article will do fine when you bring it back, but bringing it back right away defeats the purpose of taking time to improve the article so it can succeed next time, and risks alienating reviewers who might otherwise engage. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 04:34, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Sorry to butt in (I saw the conversation on SandyGeorgia's talk), but JKBrooks, could I recommend that you find someone who could act as a copyeditor on your articles before submitting them? I think you write very comprehensive, interesting articles, but the tone is sometimes more newspapery than encyclopedic (which is completely understandable, given your occupation). It's usually not enough to make me oppose, but is sometimes just off enough that I don't feel comfortable supporting. I've tried to help copyedit some of these, but I don't always have enough time to do a thorough job. If you could get someone else at the project to take a look before it goes to FAC that might solve some of the little issues. Karanacs (talk) 15:26, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

JK, it's hard for me to keep them all straight, so I could be wrong, but didn't GrahamColm (talk · contribs) help out on either one of your articles, or one of the other American football articles? Working under the pressure of FAC is hard on anyone, but many editors may be willing to have a look at a more leisurely pace. You might try Graham, or Laser brain, or any of the regular editors of other football articles you can find at WP:FA. You've got to build your own network of copyeditors, since other means (LOCE) aren't reliable. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:23, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

My thoughts are written, but not typed; tomorrow you shall have them. Sorry for my lack of expediency. ЭLСОВВОLД talk 02:48, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] 2005 ACC champs game

I've made a couple of MOS edits, but in general it's very good, you ought to go to PR right away followed by FAC. Some things I noted...

  • "In their ninth game, however, No. 3 Virginia Tech stumbled. " - not sure what that means?
  • "was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Second Team. " - unclear.
  • Don't force image sizes per WP:MOS#Images.

Not much else to report. Let me know when you take it to FAC. The Rambling Man (talk) 11:07, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Images

Hey JKB, a quote from WP:MOS#Images,

  • Some users need to configure their systems to display large text; forced large thumbnails can leave little width for text, making reading difficult.

The current image markup for landscape-format and square images is:

  • [[Image:picture.jpg|thumb|right|Insert caption here]]

and for portrait-format images:

  • [[Image:picture.jpg|thumb|upright|right|Insert caption here]]

This will result in default image width of 180px and 140px respectively, which may vary proportionately by user preferences. Image rendering in this markup does not depend on image height.

Hope that helps! The Rambling Man (talk) 06:54, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

I was thinking about you because I added some high school info after you supported. Take a look. I do not think a person's notability needs to stem from a project. At WP:CHICAGO we include both Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton because they went to high school in Cook County, Illinois. Kemp was an All-American in college and no slouch. He is one of the best DIII quarterbacks of all-time. He surely deserves a mention. People who want college football content in his article will be disappointed. I will add one more story to make it more interesting. Give me five minutes.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 07:40, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm working on reviewing this article now.

  1. I've made a couple of small tweaks myself so far.
  2. I think the second paragraph of the lead section needs some work. We have to assume that the reader does not know anything about the expansion yet, so if I come at it from that perspective I think it would be confusing. I'm still thinking about what to suggest on this one.
  3. I have a question for you: How confident are you of the link between the success of the SEC and the formation of the ACC Championship game? I'm not sure I see the link between describing this game and describing the SEC expansion. I am very willing to be convinced, however. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks, Johntex\talk 00:44, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RE:List of Atlantic Coast Conference football champions

Your welcome, and yeah it wasn't my strong suit at first, but I have figured it out. I'll give the list a review. You may also want to contact the users who already commented on the article to let them know there concerns have been fixed. « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 21:18, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Y Done nice list, I really had to dissect it to find anything wrong. Let me know when you address them or have any questions. Cheers, « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 21:40, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Replied, good work! « Gonzo fan2007 (talkcontribs) @ 08:32, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] DYK for Congressional Bowl

Updated DYK query On 6 May 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Congressional Bowl, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

[edit] Congrats!

Congratulations on the ACC champions list gaining Featured List status. Well done. --Gwguffey (talk) 22:40, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] ACC Championship Game GA

I like this reference name: <ref name="If you're reading this, you're a bigger nerd than I.">. :-)

OK, I think the article qualifies for GA now. I am going to promote it right now. Congratulations!!

However, I think a shorter version of the lead would be better. I think there is too much info on how things were before the creating of the game. Feel free to revert or modify. --Johntex\talk 00:37, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Do you mean 2007 Texas Longhorn football team? If so, I think that would be fabulous. I've been letting it sit for a bit to allow me to achieve some "distance" between the push for GA and FA. Reading it again today, I see some things that need work:
  1. Intro is a little choppy.
  2. One of the KState photos is from 2006 and should be moved. Y Done
  3. Need info on Longhorns taken in the 2008 NFL Draft
How about we collaborate and get it up to FA standards? Johntex\talk 18:24, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
    • Great! I happen to have a little time right now if this is convenient for you. I am throwing some items onto the article Talk page. Meet you over there? Johntex\talk 19:32, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Wow, checking Wikipedia before your first bathroom visit of the day. That's addiction! :-) Johntex\talk 19:37, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Yesterday I made a draft version of a daughter article for the OU game. It is at User:Johntex/2007_OU. I'll clean it up, move it to article space, and then trim that section of the main article. Johntex\talk 16:16, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WP:LOTM

Congratulations on your recent WP:FL. In case you do not know, we are running an experiment to choose the List of the Month and Lists of the Day for June. Feel free to nominate your list at User:TonyTheTiger/List of the Day/Nominees/200807 for consideration next month to be the July LOTM or a LOTD. [edit] Re: Fairbanks

Ah, I didn't realize you were up there now. I may be traveling there again later in the year, but I have no idea when at the moment. Kirill (prof) 12:18, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] You mentioned reliable sources...

Hey, JKBrooks85. I saw this response that you left for Paulmcdonald's request on WT:CFB. So, that got me wondering if your reliable sources would have any info about the various forms of the Dixie Conference? I've been periodically doing some work on this article and have come across a couple of conflicting statements that I am trying to sort out regarding Millsaps College's membership in the 1948 version. Any help would be appreciated. --Gwguffey (talk) 05:52, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for making me aware of the bibliography. I will check it out. --Gwguffey (talk) 14:06, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: ECU to BE

Yes, I have seen that, and its been debated on our messages boards. But thanks for sending it anyways. But it seems our conference rivals to the west are receiving press as well, which is making our fans scared. So we will see. [edit] Season naming

Hey JK, I've been following your discussion with Paul about the coaching articles. Pretty soon here, when I can gather up the gumption, I'm going to start work on filling out the ASU seasons. I wanted to know what the genereal consensus is on naming the articles? I don't believe the seasons for ASU are notable enough to merit their own articles and I was going to group them like - Appalachian State Mountaineers football 1928-29, Appalachian State Mountaineers football 1930-39, etc. Or should I group the seasons by coach? I've seen it done both ways and I'd like to make sure whichever way isn't going to cause any trouble where I end up on AfD. Thanks and congrats on the featured stuff! Geologik (talk) 04:12, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank you. It is a pretty neat feeling and I was totally taken by surprise when I saw GimmeBot adding the star yesterday. I think my next FL project will be List of Southern Conference football champions, using your ACC champions list as a guide. Thanks again for the help and everything! I appreciate it greatly. Geologik (talk) 22:33, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Request for Peer Review help

Thank you for you work as a peer review volunteer. Since March, there has been a concerted effort to make sure all peer review requests get some response. Requests that have gone three days or longer without a substantial response are listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog. I have three requests to help this continue.

1) If you are asked to do a peer review, please ask the person who made the request to also do a review, preferably of a request that has not yet had feedback. This is fairly simple, but helps. For example when I review requests on the backlog list, I close with Hope this helps. If my comments are useful, please consider peer reviewing an article, especially one at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog (which is how I found this article). Yours, ...

2) While there are several people who help with the backlog, lately I have been doing up to 3 or 4 peer reviews a day and can not keep this up much longer. We need help. Since there are now well over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, if each volunteer reviewed just one PR request without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog. To help spread out the load, I suggest those willing pick a day of the month and do a review that day (for example, my first edit was on the 8th, so I could pick the 8th). Please pick a peer review request with no responses yet, if possible off the backlog list. If you want, leave a note on my talk page as to which day you picked and I will remind you each month.

3) I have made some proposals to add some limits to peer review requests at Wikipedia_talk:Peer_review#Proposed_limits. The idea is to prevent any one user from overly burdening the process. These seem fairly reasonable (one PR request per editor per day, only four total PR requests per editor at a time, PR requests with cleanup banners can be delisted (like GAN quick fail), and wait two weeks to relist a PR request after it is archived), but have gotten no feedback in one week. If you have any thoughts on these, please weigh in.

Thanks again for your help and in advance for any assistance with the backlog. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:21, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Request for a peer review

Hi, we at WP:AFL are looking for an external user from to provide a peer review for one of our articles, Joel Selwood. The article is currently undergoing an extensive peer review, and your comments as a fresh reviewer with no necessary knowledge of the sporting code would be most appreciated. In particular, in helping us address any concerns regarding issues with jargon etc. Kind regards. Boomtish (talk) 10:35, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the quick review of the article. Your "fresh" outlook at possible jargon terms and subsequent comments are much appreciated - precisely what we were looking for. Also, your concerns and comments, particularly in regard with the grammar and style, were duly noted and have since been corrected. Boomtish (talk) 14:17, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Conference name change

Today the Gateway Football Conference went back under the Missouri Valley label to become the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Link I noticed there are quite a few pages that link to the GFC page. What's the best way to get the name switched over? Moving the page and then manually reviewing "what links here" and updating as necessary? Geologik (talk) 00:50, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
