Jainism teaches that all things in the universe have spirits and one should act in a way that honors them all to the best of ones abilities. It teaches that you need to show compassion for all living things in acts collectively called jiv daya which include feeding birds, feeding and caring for sick and elderly animals, purchasing animals offered for sale for slaughter and setting them free.
