[edit] Don Rosa

Thanks for putting in the wikilink - I was not aware of the page, nor did I search for it... I just thought that Sammon salaisuus was such a significant and unique Rosa story that it had to be mentioned. BTW - I tried to upload my photo of Rosa to the Swedish Wiki, but couldn't do it. Care to help there? --Janke | Talk 16:27, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] "Tampere is not a city", says EU

If I've done the diffs correctly, you added that to the Tampere article. You don't cite the source, nor could I find anything on the net (in English!) that would support it. I've deleted it - feel free to reinstate if you can cite the source. But I would think that this question is outside the "competence" of the Union (or of the Commission, for that matter). --Red King 21:55, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

I think this was done by unregistered User:84.248.94.151, not by JIP. Tampere IS a city, whatever EU may say... ;-) --Janke | Talk 22:47, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

Yes it was added by me. There really was a mention in the Finnish media that an EU directive says Tampere is too scarcely populated to be a city. Whether the directive was ever accepted (or existed in the first place), I don't know. JIP | Talk 05:32, 20 July 2005 (UTC)
Nearest reference I could find was EU Urban Audit, but it includes Tampere! There is a UN "agglomeration" measure, that looks at urban density (NUTS1 to NUTS5) and I found a reference to Finnish paper (on Nordregio.se) that mentions it? --Red King 13:31, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] The bible

Firstly let me say that I am sorry to have to bother you.

jin has closed. The result was that 32 people voted to keep all individual bible verses as seperate articles, and 34 voted that they shouldn't (2 abstensions, and 3 votes for both). This is considered by standard policy not to be a consensus decision (although the closing admin stated that it was a consensus to keep them).

Thirdly, the subject has now been put to a survey, so that it may remain open until there is a clear consensus for what appears to be a difficult issue to resolve. You may wish to take part in this survey, and record a similar vote to the one you made at the VFD there. The survey is available at Wikipedia:Bible verses.

~~~~ 18:16, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
Thanks! I've now voted in the "no individual verses should have their own articles" category. JIP | Talk 08:18, 24 July 2005 (UTC)
SimonP (the creator of the 100 or so gospel verse articles) has tried to claim that the votes for the "only notable verses" section would include most of the 30,000 verses of the bible because he sees them as notable. To avoid such a POV twisting of the votes, I have added a new section - [1] - for voting on whether the number of notable verses is more like 30,000, or more like 30. Would you care to vote there as well? ~~~~ 00:31, 25 July 2005 (UTC)
Thanks! I've voted on the "very small minority" section. JIP | Talk 04:20, 25 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] respond
i see that you created it yourself...i don't understand why you changed it. i like to have fun too(obviously right now im bored so im doing this), but this site isn't meant to be a joke. Osu8907 17:35, 25 July 2005 (UTC)
The entire page is a joke, right from the start. If you want you can add an {{rfd}} template on it to have it deleted. JIP | Talk 17:39, 25 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] ohhhh
"magical breasts." nice.
[edit] Quotes on Fat Tony
Re: an edit on the Fat Tony page. I removed some quotes, and intended to add a Wikiquote box. I ran into some problems, which I have brought up at Template talk:Wikiquotepar, and I left out the box entirely. I left a message at Talk:Fat Tony, then at the Help Desk, I was told that it goes without saying that Wikipedia is not Wikiquote. I was also told that there was no offical policy on the subject. --203.167.247.190 02:59, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Wolff
When in doubt, go to the source. I just e-mailed Tobias Wolff to ask him if anyone ever named an asteroid for him. DS 12:31, 29 July 2005 (UTC)
  • Thanks! Let me know if he responds. I've half a mind to buy an asteroid guide to see if it mentions anything about 13335 Tobiaswolf. JIP | Talk 12:33, 29 July 2005 (UTC)
And he replies this is news to me. Either it's not named after me, or the dufuses mis-spelled my name, as you noted, which seems definitive to me. DS 18:43, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
  • This means that it was indeed named after some guy named Tobias Wolf, not Tobias Wolff. That was the last entry in the entire "repeated letters" part of the red link recovery, so now we can move further. Thanks for your help. JIP | Talk 19:46, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Thank you for advice to the episode. But ...
(Because I/218.183.76.159 am Japanese, it is not good at English. )
The content that I described is true upon one's word to the god.
It is amusing that you erase the fact because you do not know.
I think that it corrected the words in which it was pointed out that it advertised.
I do not think that there is right meddling said by you because it is free to acquire the account.
You seem to be a good person. Rational correspondence is hoped for.
[edit] Thank you for correction and believing my word. But ...
Because my explanation was insufficient, there is lack in the first half of your description.
Because there is mother together with the baby for 24 hours, she is possible to attend it almost in the first time strike of the baby of the betrayal, walking for the first time, and the first time crawl.
However, it is rare that Most fathers can attend the scene by working outside in daytime.
It is possible to use it by starting the camera momentarily. because of all carrying of the camera phone.
Carrying with the camera phone enables baby's first scene and the present is enabled from mother to father.
Mother can also share happy impression with father.
The description of the above-mentioned is a significance of existence of the E-mail function of the camera phone.
I think that the latter half is correctly transmitted.
I contributed the episode at the will of me while thinking that not the instruction of the company but it was my fate.
I will ask you for an important mission of sending the development episode of the camera phone to the sphere in English.
Thank you .--218.183.76.159 15:52, 30 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Bible Vote
Hate to trouble you again, but a category on Wikipedia:Bible verses was recently added, 'A vast minority', and it seems that your vote probably would have gone there had it been there when you voted. Almafeta 17:23, 29 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Chicken Tikka
Either your hoax has been rumbled - or we are missing something, either way perhaps you'd like to swing by and explain yourself. --Doc (?) 19:47, 29 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Signature changed
I'm editing my own talk page to show that my signature has been changed to add a direct link to my user page. JIP | Talk 08:35, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Psi Phi VfD
Hi there. I am sorry, I evidently made a mistake. I am not able to view the deleted article's history to try to explain myself and it is too long ago for me to remember. However, the two VfDs were brought by the same (redlink) editor, so perhaps I confused myself by looking at the VfDs' histories rather than the articles'. Anyway, apologies. -Splash 16:15, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Just thought I'd let you know. JIP | Talk 16:24, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Rules of Acquisition
I take MAJOR exception to your restoring those fake rules. Non-canon is one thing, as rules mentioned in novels, RPGs, and other Official Printed Material are fine. OTOH, the rules you restored were MADE UP by a THIRD PARTY site, linked to at the bottom of the page. If THESE are legit, maybe we should solicit Trek boards for anyone who wants to make stuff up and post it in Wikipedia? Maybe I'll go make up my own rules now...--StAkAr Karnak 19:15, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, I did not know they were made up by a third party site. I thought they were officially licensed. I'll go delete them. JIP | Talk 19:16, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] The Rex
I wasn't too sure about the quotes at the beginning either... although I think the BBC one possibly contextualises .. stuff. Have you got any feelings on the neutrality of the rest of the article? Personally I think it reads like a flyer, but I always hate my own writings. ZoFreX 06:43, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
I also think it reads like a flyer. I'll have to read it again more carefully to check whether it violates NPOV. The quotes at the beginning just stood out immediately. JIP | Talk 06:45, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] R-Kiosk(i)
Heh, no, the article was created by an Englishman, not an Estonian. I chose to use the spelling "R-Kiosk" as that is the name the company gives itself on the English version of its website, and as this is the English language Wikipedia, I thought it was correct to use it. --Daniel Lawrence 10:03, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
The way it originally read sounded like it was written by an Estonian. I am not sure of the official naming policy in Wikipedia, but I think this article should reflect the native name, especially considering there are no R-Kioskis in English-speaking countries. JIP | Talk 10:06, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
That's fine. We've got a redirect in place, so whichever spelling someone uses, it'll go to the same article. --Daniel Lawrence 10:22, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Interested in leaving a quote for the Signpost?
I'm writing an article about the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedians for Decency VfD debate. I would appreciate anything (facts, comments, etc.) you can give me about the whole incident. See User:Ral315/Signpost. ral315 07:20, August 19, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll go check it out in a while. JIP | Talk 07:34, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] London Drops / Lontoo Rae
Following our brief conversation on the naming of the R-Kioski article, I came across the London drops article. If we should use native spellings, then this article should be called Lontoo Rae. What are your thoughts on this? --Daniel Lawrence 20:36, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
  • Hmm, the correct Finnish spelling is Lontoon rae. But I'm not sure about this, because although R-Kioski is the name of a company, London drops are the name of a type of sweets. It can be also used in a general sense and not as a commercial brand name. JIP | Talk 06:13, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
    • That's strange, because I've got a bag in the cupboard at the moment, and it definitely says "Lontoo rae". Anyway, from reading your reply I can see why the article has the title it has. Though it might be worth mentioning the Finnish name in the article, if it can be decided whether it's Lontoo or Lontoon. Google seems to bring up pages for both spellings. --Daniel Lawrence 09:42, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
      • You're right, the bag does say that. I was just confused, because Finns generally call them "Lontoon rae", which is grammatically correct Finnish for "drops of London". "Lontoo rae" is technically ungrammatical. JIP | Talk 09:49, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Jedda / Jeddah
Why have you deleted the disambiguation for Jedda? If you click on Jedda in the article on Robert Tudawali it now goes to the Saudi Arabian city. Robert Tudawali was an Australian aborigine; as far as I know he never left Australia and had no connection with Saudi Arabia. There is no harm in having a disambiguation for Jeddah, but why can't we have one for Jedda as well?
Ruszewski
I have deleted it because I have already created a disambiguation page at Jeddah (disambiguation), like I said in the edit summary. I don't see the point in having two disambiguation pages with links to the exact same articles. JIP | Talk 08:51, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
The point is that there are different spellings involved. There is no way to access the movie Jedda unless you know enough about it to come in obliquely through the actor's or director's name. Try it!. go to the main page and enter 'Jedda'; you will transfer to the Saudi city, with no indication that the Australian movie article exists.
Ruszewski
By typing "Jedda" in the search box, you get to the Saudi city, with the disambig link I added. Clicking on the disambig link reveals the existence of the movie. But maybe I could change the main Jeddah article into a disambig page and have the Saudi city at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The only problem is the huge number of articles linking to Jeddah. JIP | Talk 16:44, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks!
Thanks for fixing the vandalism on my user page. Price you pay for participating in VFD, I guess. Another person who can't figure out the difference between articles and user pages, I guessing? :) --Etacar11 14:14, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Do anything please
You are a wiki admin and I need your help. Can you explain about this changes to my page? [Insulting, abusing and vandaling language!] He is flooding page Kourosh ziabari with under-18 langauge all time and I don't know what to do 70.52.6.147
I am not a wiki admin. Therefore I can't do much more to the page than you can. But I'll have a look anyway. JIP | Talk 04:27, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] P_One P_Two P_Three
I was testing endless redirection. I wanted to know how Wiki handled it. Ah,I just realized that I made the mistake of putting them on Wikipedia. [edit] User:Leistung
No, it's not what I'm doing. See my comments on Leistung's talk page to see what I am doing. Leistung originally added this to the Adolf Hitler article. I reverted it as POV, and he contacted me, saying I shouldn't have. I told him about NPOV, and he responded by deleting referenced facts from the article and by posting a personal attack on my talk page. Since then, I've been trying to reason with him, and I think we're approaching mutual understanding by now. - ulayiti (talk) 11:05, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
Thanks. Actually, if you remove the Hitler-praising first sentence of his addition, it's actually quite factual and verifiable. However, the personal attack was completely out of place, he should not have done that. I admit to having read his comments on your talk page before reading yours on his. JIP | Talk 11:08, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
I think 'courageously' and 'selflessly' are also very POV. And apparently I wasn't the only one to do so, since User:119 reverted the same edit before me. - ulayiti (talk) 11:14, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
Yes, they are POV too. But if you remove them, and stick to the facts that Hitler fought against overwhelming odds and was given an award for bravery, then it's factual. The article should document what Hitler did, not whether what Hitler did was good or bad. JIP | Talk 11:16, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
I am rather new to Wikipedia. However, I do know something about History. I am now being accused of "personal attacks" even though everything I write is being reversed. Udayiti does not change the POV that he mentions, simply deletes everything. That means that I cannot say anything. I do have documentation to support what I say, but it is probably not on the Internet. It is very easy to get bad ( and possibly false) material about Hitler on the Internet. However, newspapers and other material written by the British in the early thirties are definitely favourable to Hitler. Therefore, I can only say that any subsequnt change in this sentiment, especially written in this Century by the British is probably false, as History can be rewritten. Leistung 14:05, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
By "personal attacks" I only meant your comment on Ulayiti's talk page, seen from the link provided by Ulayiti above: "You would make a good companion to Hitler". You haven't made any other personal attacks. I think your addition about Hitler belongs in the article, but using words like "bravely" or "selflessly" is POV. JIP | Talk 12:29, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
I agree totally with JIP, but I'd just like to add that if you have the sources at your disposal, then it will be easy for you to cite them. You only need to write down where you've taken the information. As I've already told you quite a few times, I have nothing against including the text in the article as long as it's neutral and properly referenced. - ulayiti (talk) 13:43, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Signpost article about the VfD
Thanks, my guess is that it was probably a typo. I'll fix it and add it in an "Errors and omissions" column for next week's Signpost. ral315 22:11, August 26, 2005 (UTC)
no problem, this appears to be a user who continually keeps spamming this same sort of stuff everywhere around, as an IP and using usernames, if you notice anymore stuff like this please let me or another admin know so we can get it. Jtkiefer T | @ | C ----- 06:31, August 30, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Hietalahti
Apparently there's a Hietalahti in Vaasa too. They list it as their home stadium here. I'm not from Vaasa, but a quick look at a map tells me that they have such a place (and it would really be very very odd if a football slub from Vaasa played their home matches in Helsinki). By the way, I didn't know there was a Hietalahti in Helsinki when I wrote the stub. - ulayiti (talk) 16:47, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll disambiguate it. JIP | Talk 16:52, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] A Finland portal?
Hi! Since you seem to be one of the most active Finnish contributors round here, I'd like to know your opinion as to whether we should have a WikiPortal about Finland. The Swedes have one, and even the Estonians, so we should too! :) I thought about creating one, but I wouldn't be able to maintain it on my own... so would you be interested in contributing? - ulayiti (talk) 17:47, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
Hmm, this sounds interesting. I don't think I'd be able to create or maintain one either, but if such a portal is created anyway, I am certainly interested in contributing to it. JIP | Talk 17:48, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
I've created Portal:Finland. You're welcome to contribute. :) - ulayiti (talk) 19:53, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Re: Your RfA nomination
