The Singapore Model United Nations (SIMUN or SiMUN) is an annual, 3-day simulation of a UN conference attended by more than 300[1] secondary school, high school and junior college students from more than 20 private, independent, and public schools in Singapore. This conference gives all participants an opportunity to act as diplomatic chairpersons, ambassadors, delegates, securitaries, reporters, or press editors from more than 60 countries, NGOs, and delegations represented in the United Nations.

[edit] General Assembly

The General Assembly consists of 64 delegations. These delegations can be countries or organizations. All delegations are allowed to participate in debates by default. Governments that are not universally recognized and non-governmental organizations (such as Amnesty International and the Palestinian Authority) do not have the right to vote for resolutions.

Below is a complete list of delegations represented in SIMUN.

[edit] Press Corps

SIMUN gathers a team of interested students with experiences in editing, publishing, and photography every year before the conferences[3]. They are called the Press Corps. In the 3-day duration of the conference, the press corps publish 'SIMUN Says', a daily newsletter of at least 4 pages[4]. These newsletters contain up-to-date information on the day's events, key speeches, interviews, and other relevant articles. Every delegation involved with SIMUN receives only one copy of SIMUN Says in the interest of saving paper.

Beside the 'SIMUN Says' newsletter, the Press Corps are also responsible for photographs that are taken throughout the conferences. Two press representatives are deployed into every committee room to take photos and notes from debates and speeches[2].

External media are also interested in the Singapore Model United Nations. Channel NewsAsia, Strait Times and many other professional press bodies are invited to the conferences. News reports about SIMUN are often seen on TV during the days of the annual conferences.

[edit] Securitaries

Securitaries are junior participants in Model United Nations with comparably less experiences. They act as essential helpers to the smooth and effective running of every Model United Nations conference. They learn about the procedures and gain experiences for debates and speeches in order to become a MUN delegate in the future. The word "securitary" derives from the combination of "security" and "secretary".

During the conferences, securitaries screen and deliver paper notes in between delegations and the chairpersons, often from/to different committee rooms. They are responsible to making photocopies of documents such as resolutions and record forms. Some securitaries act as time-keepers for speeches and debates; some take notes from the speakers and inform the chairs of the procedure; some man the doors for security and check the badges (which are passes issued to participants to gain access to conference rooms) and appropriate dressing attire of delegates. They also monitor the behavior of delegates to ensure non-disruptive and professional atmosphere of the conference.

In SIMUN, a head securitary and a deputy are elected from the team of securitaries annually to manage the conference in general, keep a track of records, and conduct more serious disciplinary measures.

[edit] SIMUN 2007

On 15th of March, 2007, the 3rd Annual Singapore Model United Nations conference opened. The French Ambassador of Singapore, His Excellency Mr Buhler and many honored guests attended the opening ceremony and delivered keynote speeches. Many press representatives attended the ceremony. Later, the ambassador was interviewed by Channel NewsAsia[5].

21 schools in Singapore registered to attend this conference. The Human Rights Committee was divided into 2 sub-committees due to the number of issues to be discussed regarding Human Rights.

In SIMUN 2007, Greece, Argentina, Poland, Vietnam, Laos, and Cyprus were not represented due to the absence of the schools (HCIS and YESS) which the delegations were assigned to. In consideration of the large number of Chairpersons in SIMUN 2007, the delegations of Singapore, Libya, Tanzania, and the Philipines were created and solely consisted of Chairpersons in order to give them the chance to debate.
