[edit] DYK rules

You have missed some points here.

The rules begin like this:

1. First, an editor posts the suggested text for a DYK entry on the DYK template talk page. Discussions about individual suggestions also appear on the DYK template talk page, such as suggested improvements of the proposed DYK text, or comments about the eligibility of the article under the requirements listed on this page.

2. If the suggested DYK meets the requirements...

Ergo, you don't just post an entry straight to the Next Update page. It goes to the template talk page first, then it gets reviewed by an independent party, and then if that party finds it meets the requirements, it becomes eligible for posting to the Next Update page.

Also, while promoting your own hook to Next Update is not outright forbidden, it is strongly discouraged, and should only ever be considered when, for example, there are no other appropriate hooks available.

Hope that helps to clarify things. I've now posted your hook to the template talk page BTW, so it can go through the normal review process. Regards, Gatoclass (talk) 07:05, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Name change?

Hi there - I noticed that your username is User:Jamessweney, but you're inhabiting the user/talk pages belonging to someone else, User:Jim Sweeney. Is this deliberate? Your edit summary suggests that you were renaming yourself, but that's not the way to do it... There are two options:

  1. Visit WP:RENAME and ask to be renamed to a username that hasn't been taken.
  2. If the name you want has already been taken, but has never edited (or only have some trivial edits), then a bureaucrat can let you usurp that name: see WP:USURP. Although renames aren't my area of expertise, the Jim Sweeney account was created in 2005, but doesn't appear to have any edits and so may be eligible for usurpation.

It might be a good idea to sort out the mismatch between your registered username and the name you're in fact using. Firstly, it's confusing, because anyone trying to look at your contribution history, for example, can't easily do so (the link on the left shows Jim Sweeney's contributions, not Jamessweney's.) Secondly, if Jim Sweeney comes back, he might be confused as to why someone's claiming squatters' rights on his userpage!

Hope this makes sense. Drop me a line if you'd like to discuss further. Regards, BencherliteTalk 07:46, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars

Updated DYK query On 2 June 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

[edit] The Military history WikiProject Newsletter : Issue XXVII (May 2008)

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter
Issue XXVII (May 2008)
Project news
  • Editors needed for Tag & Assess 2008. To coincide with the summer holidays, it will be gearing up from 15 June. As usual, barnstars galore!
  • Partner peer reviews: for a thirty-day trial period, we'll be running joint peer reviews with Wikiproject Video Games. The idea is simple: we help with their reviews; they help with ours. This way both wikiprojects benefit from new reviewers and new ideas!
  • We're notable: A new book, Simon Fowler's 2007 Guide to Military History on the Internet (UK:Pen & Sword, ISBN 9781844156061) rates Wikipedia as "the best general resource" for military research (p. 7). Of the military pages, he says: "The results are largely accurate and generally free of bias" (he also suggests people join the wikiproject). When rating WP as the No. 1 military site (p. 201) he says "Wikipedia is often criticised for its inaccuracy and bias, but in my experience the military history articles are spot on."
  • A-Class reviews: the usual four-day review period may now be extended by up to three days (ie seven days in total) in the following circumstances:
  1. the article has no opposes but has insufficient support for promotion or
  2. the article's nominator requests more time to resolve matters arising during the review.

[edit] Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry

Was created, and probably can use your expertise in making it a better article. Cheers--mrg3105 (comms) ♠♣ 14:37, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Jim, I've converted it to a redirect, it's just about plausible as a search term. David Underdown (talk) 16:14, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
