Jimmy McKinnell Junior was long time secretary and manager with Scottish Football League team Queen of the South F.C. of Dumfries.
Jimmy junior, like his father Jimmy Senior, was the backbone of the club throughout his years there. He took over as secretary/manager in 1947, from his father, a position he held until 1961 when he gave up the post of manager. However he carried on the duty of club secretary until 1968, when Queens awarded him a testimonial against Celtic F.C. He was a regular at Palmerston Park right up until 1995, when he passed away at the age of 93.[1]
Jimmy was manager at the time of Queens only Scottish Cup semi final appearance of the 20th century in 1950. That success was balanced by the disappointment of relegation from top division football the same season. In 1950/51 Queens were promoted straight back to the top flight as Scottish B Division champions. This was to be Queens only Scottish national title in the 20th century.[2]
With Jimmy as manager the early and mid 1950s saw the club's most successful spell to date achieving consistent mid table finishes in the Scottish A Division (as the top flight was then called). The solidity of Queen's results through this period peaked with a sixth place finish in 1956 - a finish surpassed only once in the club's history. Queens were subsequently relegated from the top division in 1959.[3]
