Richard James "Jim" Shannon MLA, TA (born 1965) is a Unionist politician from Northern Ireland.
Shannon was educated at Ballywalter Primary School and Coleraine Academical Institution. He was in the Ulster Defence Regiment in 1973-1975 and 1976-1977 and was awarded the General Service Medal. He served in the Royal Artillery TA from 1977-1988. He is a member of the loyal orders. [1]
He is a councillor who was first elected to Ards Borough Council in 1985 and served as Mayor in 1991-1992. He was elected as a member of the Northern Ireland Forum for Political Dialogue (1995-1997). Shannon was has been re-elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly for Strangford since 1998.
