Jim Qualls
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James Robert "Jim" or "Jimmy" Qualls was a major league baseball outfielder and pinch-hitting specialist for the Chicago Cubs in 1969, the Montreal Expos in 1970 and the Chicago White Sox in 1972.
He played 120 games for the Cubs in their tumultuous 1969 season, most of them in utility and pinch-hitting roles. He is remembered specifically for a game in early September, when he knocked a base hit in the ninth inning and broke up Tom Seaver's bid for a perfect game, disappointing the Shea Stadium crowd. However, this was only a minor setback for the Mets, as in that series they were in the process of melting the Cubs' summer-long first place lead down to almost nothing. Within a few days the Mets would take over first place, and go on to win the 1969 World Series.
