Ji Xinpeng is the first Chinese badminton player to win the gold medal in the men's singles competition at the 2000 Summer Olympics, defeating Hendrawan in the final. Ji's gold medal feat came as a big surprise because no one had expected him to do so since he has never won any tournaments previously. He also defeated Taufik Hidayat and Peter Gade Christensen along the way to the final.
Ji became a coach in the Chinese national badminton team in 2008.
