[edit] Decision Made

When I took an indefinite "Wikibreak," it was becoming clear that my specialized areas of interest and expertise were such that contributions I would be qualified to make were becoming less likely to meet increasingly restrictive content policies. This has become even clearer now that I am finding that articles on subjects on which I have relied on Wikipedia as a research tool are now being swiftly deleted, and I am having to dig for them in much more specialized publications, if they are to be found at all. That I can find articles on virtually any plant species, notable or otherwise, and public high schools with a couple hundred students, but nothing on the candidates running for office in my Congressional District, or on agencies of my state government, both of which have a serious impact on my life, makes Wikipedia a site I am visiting more and more rarely as a reader. I am, thus, less inclined to devote my time trying to find some way to contribute as a writer or editor. I do wish you all well, and hope, quite literally, that you have fun with your Wikitime. In the unlikely event that Wikipedia's scope is again broadened, I might come out of retirement and rejoin you. "J-M" (Jgilhousen) (talk) 06:19, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Gosh J.G.: I, for one, greatly miss your contributions. Just yesterday I came across something you had done brilliant work on (related to Central Oregon ghost towns), and felt sad it had come to an end. I wish you well. —EncMstr 07:11, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
EncMstr: You're too kind, but thank you just the same. I obviously very badly misunderstood the Wikipedia concept. I mistakenly thought that freed from the tyranny of page counts, articles which are important to ordinary people in small towns, and members of very select groups, could finally have a place. The rapid deletion of the article on one of only two challengers to my sitting congressman on grounds of lack of "prominence," despite the protestations of Keri Chisholm, editor of the preeminent political blog in our state and a prominent political consultant himself, pretty much convinced me that Oregon, and particularly rural Oregon, is too "small potatoes" for Wikipedia. Since I live and work in Oregon, that pretty much excludes me. Sure, I can find out who the principal of David Douglas High School is, but nothing about who may represent me in Congress. Wikipedia remains an important research tool... but not on any of the subjects which are most important to me in my daily life. I'm too busy to do it right now, but perhaps a specialized Wiki for Oregonians is in order... at least until our state and its concerns reach prominence that meets Wikipedia standards. With only five congressional districts, I am not holding my breath for that to happen within my lifetime. "J-M" (Jgilhousen) (talk) 19:37, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:ODClogo.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:ODClogo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:19, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Y Done A nice image of the same logo in patch form, with a full FUR, was uploaded for use on Oregon Department of Corrections yesterday. Katr67 (talk) 20:51, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Happy Trails Padre!

Hi J-M, thanks for the nice note. If I ever make to your neck of the woods I'll hold you to the offer of a tour! Katr67 (talk) 01:30, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
