[edit] British overseas territories
Hi - it's best not to rename pages by cutting-and-pasting - this loses the page history and makes things confusing. Instructions on the right way to do it are at meta:Help:Renaming (moving) a page - depending on how long ago you created your account you might not have the "move" feature yet, and if there was page history you wanted to replace at the new location, you can't move over that. In that case the thing to do is post at Wikipedia:Requested moves, and be patient until someone helps you out. Anyway, I've fixed the move - if you go to the "history" tab of British overseas territories, you'll see all the old history that used to be at Overseas territory of the United Kingdom. This Overseas territory of the United Kingdom link jungle was such a mess that I couldn't move it simply... It's the first time I wished I were an admin ;-) By the way, I also cleaned a lot of redirects to the official name and I proposed a few of them for deletion with the new prod procedure. Hi again - I noticed you redirected Overseas territory to List of dependent territories and I did the same for Overseas territories which was the last remaining big redirect pointing to Overseas territory of the United Kingdom. However, what I'd really like to do is piece together a meaningful article to summarize the concept of overseas territories, with links to history, geography and administrative structures. The List of dependent territories is a good start but it should be reduced to a simpler list format after the main article is written. So, how should I proceed? Just go ahead and start writing (even if just a stub with disambig for now) or move the list to the main Overseas territories article to preserve its history? Any advice appreciated at this late/early hour... -- JFG 05:53, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
- Hello again - regarding a more generic article like dependent territory or overseas territory: I think that's a good idea - I was a little surpised that I couldn't find one already. However - I think List of dependent territories is the best bet for a starting point; it's got some good clear descriptions of these territories, but isn't so huge that it needs to be split up; the list of territories that fit this description just isn't very huge, and needs plenty of explanation along with it. So my suggestion would be that List of dependent territories be renamed (moved) to dependent territory, and the generic redirects (overseas territories, etc) be pointed there. Does this make sense? I can do the move if it sounds good to you, but it needs administrator privileges. CDC (talk) 17:19, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with your comments on my talk page. Before moving List of dependent territories, let me start working on the contents, because I can't decide what would be the best title, so I need to dig deeper into the subject and the history of such territories as various remnants of colonial empires. The way each nation administered their empires had a direct influence on the way overseas territories are perceived even today... I'll let you know when I need the move. Hello Crzrussian. You wrote that Hofstadter's law is not worthy of a standalone article and redirected it to GEB. I respectfully disagree: this adage has grown to be a significant part of computer culture, independently of its original mention in Hofstadter's book, and is nowadays cited by people who have perhaps not read GEB (personally, this law is one of the few things I remember 20 years after reading this book). In addition to its similarity with Murphy's law with a self-reference twist, comparisons can be made with the mythical man-month and discussions of procrastination. Hofstadter's law is probably more well-known than many others cited in List of adages named after people (Imbesi's Law of the Conservation of Filth comes to mind). Besides, the GEB article does not even mention this law at all, so your redirect is confusing to people who turn to Wikipedia for a definition of Hofstadter's law. Therefore I took the liberty to revert this page and the other spelling Hofstadter's Law. I hope that more people will eventually expand this stub and turn it into a significant article. -- JFG 14:30, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
- JFG, the problem is that I don't think this article will ever go beyond a dictionary definition. It may be a notable adage, I don't know, but if nothing encyclopedic could be said about it, it cannot have its own article. What if we reiderct it into Adages named after people? - Thanks for your reply. I see your point but I believe that enough "culture" has developed around this "law" to foster significant encyclopedic input over time. - Sure, go for AfD if you like... I'm not passionately attached to this particular page, I just thought it deserved a chance! While you're at it, take a look at List of eponymous laws which should be merged with List of adages named after people (I've just added merge templates there). Incidentally, it looks like Hofstadter's law was removed and added several times from those lists independently, so there's definitely reason for debate. -- JFG 15:42, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm sorry to bother with a useless personal question, but I noticed that you moved the article for Sign 'O' the Times and replaced the O with a peace sign. I'm a XP user browsing with Firefox, and I can't seem to get the symbol to display. I'm using Lucida Sans Unicode as my font, and Unicode (UTF-8) as my default character encoding. - I'm a Mac user but I have tested those pages on an XP box before posting them: OK in Firefox, bad in IE. Can you see Chinese characters such as 我愛你? If you don't, try going to Language Options in the XP config panel, select the Languages tab and check "Install files for Far-East languages". Reboot and pray ;-) -- JFG 02:30, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

For what it's worth, it looks like an admin already changed it. Also, the MediaWiki: pages are essentially permanently protected... admins can't unprotect them, even temporarily. And, as a random aside, I support the change (though I definitely prefer zvon.org's HTML versions, as I mentioned on the mediawiki talk page). --Interiot 05:23, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
