[edit] Description
Jewell is located on state highway K-14 southeast of Mankato in Jewell County, Kansas. It's a very small, nicely laid out town organized around a town square and park. A stone and bronze marker in the square tells the story of Fort Jewell, a sod fort built to protect the citizens from an Indian raid. A new community center was built in 1999 across from the city park, it features a Public library, American Legion offices and a 4 room hotel.
Next door to the Community center is The Scoop and Loomis Lofts, both run by Bill & Becky Loomis, the Town Mayor and his wife. The Lofts rent out to hunters and vacationers alike and feature fully stocked kitchens. The Scoop is an old fashioned ice cream shop and gift store.
Jewell is surrounded with great places for outdoor recreation. The Jewell state fishing lake is a short distance west of town, Lovewell State park and reservoir is a few miles north, and Glen Elder State park featuring the Waconda reservoir is a short distance to the south. Renowned for pheasant and quail hunting, Jewell County also offers hunting of deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and other game. Bald eagles nest close to Lovewell Lake; migratory pelicans add an unusual dimension to bird watching. Other wildlife include herons, cranes, prairie chickens, red foxes, prairie dogs etc.
