Simple turbojet engine airflow diagram, showing stages of intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust gas turbine operation. This centrifugal impeller compresses air by spinning it outward against the sides of the case. Later axial type designs would achieve higher compression ratios, by efficiently directing airflow through multiple stages of rotor blades and stationary guide vanes.
