Talk:Jessica Simpson

"Simpson toured with boy band 98 Degrees to promote her new album. After dating for two years the couple cooled their relationship, stating that the "break" allowed them to concentrate on their music careers"

[edit] Should the Controversy Section be changed to Critisism?
To be fair and ballance what the christian group critisized her for was one thing. Her latest Album "A Public Affair" was critisized a lot for its unorginality and poor quality amongsted Industry Critics. Te lead single "A Public Affair" most directly recieved this critisism as noted in the article on that Single. Also her fathers envolvement in her career has been continued to be questioned within the industry. This has led some to believe (removed unsourced contentious material per policy)
[edit] Dessert Beauty & "I DO"
Why isn't there no mention of Dessert Beauty? Jessica Simpson is a co-founder of the company. ThisIsMyName 08:11, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- I realized this before I posted the message above. The article didn't say anything about it at that time. ThisIsMyName 06:46, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
The article also fails to mention anything about jessicas book writting. she published "I DO", based on her wedding with nick lachey.

[edit] Media Mogul
The single for "The Dukes of Hazzard's" high debut on the pop charts proves that she can be a force to be reckoned with, and most likely we will see her album sales skyrocket in the near future. She is good.
- How do we know her album sales will sky-rocket in the near future? i think this should be striked from the record simply because it could be a flop just like all the rest of her albums. We dont know about the future and this is wishful thinking and not nuetral at all.
- I agree with the above poster; why would her album sales suddenly sky rocket? Besides, The Dukes of Hazzard soundtrack isn't even specifically 'her' album, it's just for the movie that she stars in, so naturally, being that Jessica has always primarily been a singer, she contributed to it. Wether the soundtrack flops or not shouldn't really be much of concern for her, seeing as it isn't going to affect her record sales. - Triggy, Jul. 15.
[edit] POV anyone?
This entire article is so POV it isn't funny. Who wrote it? Jessica Simpson's publicist? (removed unsourced contentious material per policy)
and nowhere is this mentioned in the article.
- Oh yes, because adding something to the article such as "OMGZ PEOPLE F1ND H3R TOTALLY REVOLTING!!11onetwo" wouldn't be P.O.V. - Triggy, Jul. 15.
- from WP:POV - "Some contributors to Wikipedia abuse the term POV, taking it as an antonym to "NPOV", implying that a particular article or passage is affected by an editor's point of view. This is not what the term POV means, and should be avoided. The term they are groping for is "biased"." - --Dem 13:42, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
What about the (removed unsourced contentious material per policy)? Many (removed unsourced contentious material per policy).
- The Payola incident never specified which artists record companies figures they inflated. Plus, ALL major record companies were found guilty of Payola, not just Jessica's record company. To single her out is unfair and biased. Wikipedia is not a place for listing various bad reviews. The only thing that matters is listing her work, not writing a article of how bad OR how good she is.
[edit] Missing iraq Footage
can anyone make an article section about this? I mean it's very intresting, she WENT TO IRAQ and for some reason ABC didn't air it.

- This has no significance whatsoover. Also, even if the story is mentioned, I don't accept the idea of having an entire section titled "Butt goes flat". --rob 22:04, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
This is not of any relevance to the article. The "butt flat" thing is a tabloid story that has no significance to biographical and factual information about Jessica Simpson. This page is for educational purposes, not entertainment. --qlkbz 10:30, 1 November 2006 (CST)
[edit] nicer photos?
does anyone have a nicer photo of jessica? the lead pic doesn't do her justice
- I put the pic there, and I'll be honest, it's not her best. It's main attribute, is that it's a public domain picture. Having 6 out of 6 images copyrighted, seemed like a stretch of "fair use". If somebody does change the lead pic, I would ask that the old photo be kept in the article (it's the only one for her USO tour which is a signficant thing she's done). Also, if a "fair use" image is used as replacement, it should have a good tie-in with the content of the article (not just look pretty). Although, ideally, we can find an even better PD picture. --rob 21:06, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
-
- do you guys know what the limits are on fair use for something like this? Norah Jones and Madonna both have non-PD images up. Image:Norahjonesandoldcarpicture.jpg has a copyright notice there. maybe we could just move this PD simpson pic down a bit.
-
-
- Actually, I don't know the limits, and I think few do. There seems to have been a substantial increase in efforts to remove many fairuse images from wikipedia (I know this is old news to some). A couple were speedy deleted from this article already. Currently, the target is unknown sources, or ones with no appropriate tag. But, it sounds like even greater restrictions may occur on fairuse. It's actually, a mistake to go by "precident" of other uses of fairuse images, since lots of them may get deleted, it seems. I think the Image:Norahjonesandoldcarpicture.jpg, as a fairuse image, which isn't an album cover, is probably an example of what not to have, if/when there are PD options available. --rob 02:52, 20 September 2005 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
- I rethought the pic, and decided that even though the album cover looked nicer, the album cover belongs with discussion of the album, in order to qualify as fairuse. Hopefully somebody can find an even better PD or GFDL image. --rob 11:02, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Featured Music Project evaluation
Jessica Simpson has been evaluated according to the Featured Music Project criteria, most recently affirmed as of this revision. The article's most important issues are listed below. Since this evaluation, the article may have been improved.
The following areas need work to meet the criteria: Lead - Comprehensiveness - Pictures - Audio - References - Format/Style |
-
- The space below is for limited discussion on this article's prospects as a featured article candidate. Please take conversations to the article talk page.
- Lead: Should be two to three paragraphs long
- Comprehensiveness: Needs material on musical style, influences, legacy (if any), critical appraisal
- Pictures: Nice free pictures, but non-free image needs rationale; see Wikipedia:Image_description_page#Fair_use_rationale
- Audio: Needs sound samples of significant recordings
- References: Needs much larger references section that includes inline citations and possibly also print sources such as published biographies
- Format/Style: Needs more text under "Discography" heading
[edit] Whistle register
I am removing Simpson's categorization as a whistle register singer. Please refer to the whistle register article for details. If you restore her categorization as a whistle register singer, please produce proof—specifically, which notes above E6 she hits in which songs. Just being able to sing high doesn't count; the whistle register is an elite and rarely-used discipline (which, consequently, can ruin one's voice if not done correctly). --C-squared 04:19, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Whistle
Please take her off!!!
She hit an E6 in "Your faith in me"
- Hitting a whistle register on occassion does not warrant her to be listed as a WR singer.
That was not an E6. That was not in the whistle register.
Actually, it was in fact an E6. I know what I'm talking about.

According to Forbes magazine Jessica is only worth 8 million dollars. Can someone provide a link.

- She doesn't have a number-one hit, there's no way she could get 79 million dollars--hottie 22:35, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
- "Together they are worth $80 million, but Nick has contributed a mere $6 million. At the time of their marriage, Nick was wealthier from the boy band 98 degrees; since then, Simpson has shot to superstardom with a net worth of more than $79 million." -- These numbers don't add up; if she's worth $79m, and together they are worth $80m, then Nick's contribution must be $1m. Or their net worth is $85m. Given the Forbes source that disproves these numbers and the dubious arithmetic, I'm removing this paragraph. --duncan 15:57, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
Don't y'all know that Forbes only gives how much many they make a year. A net worth is what they have earned over the years in their careers. (UTC)

[edit] Bad links?
Some of the external links, especially WMPH and possibly the other that starts with an unnecessary hyphen, appear to be spam or unhelpful. A user has been adding them to numerous dance artists's pages. I would suggest removing them, but given that this article receives more monitoring than the other articles I am removing them from, would like to leave this decision to someone more familiar with the article, as it is possible they are helpful and encyclopic and such. : ) --Roombalogin 05:02, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
I've edited the artist info at the top of the page to feature the official website. They had jessicasimpson.cc as the official page for quite some time. [edit] Rumours
Do "well publicised rumours" really have a place in an encyclopedia entry about Jessica Simpson. Perhaps if it was a well known fact that (removed unsourced contentious material per policy) then it should be included. But seeing as it was just a rumour circulated and probably created by tabloids is it really relevant to the article?
No It is not allowed. Only information that is completely true should be included on the wikipedia articles, if you included it, it would be deleted. Jessica_simpson121
I wasn't planning on including it. It's already in the article and the reason for my question was because I believe that it should be deleted but just wanted clarification to see what others thought
Rumors shouldn't have a place on wikipedia, they are just rumors that have floated around on tabloids, far from anything factual. Once there is solid evidence besides widespread publication e.g. evidence, then it has a place here. wkilis

[edit] Album Sales for A Public Affair
Is it just me, or is the RIAA certification of the album as Gold status wrong? Doesn't an album have to sell at least 500,000 copies before it's certified as Gold? Simpson's current album has only sold a little over half (specifically 240,000) of the 500,000 copies required to be a Gold status album.Vera26 23:33, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
- They tend to give out the certifications early.66.210.114.195

I have noticed that the statement that "the Dukes of Hazzard movie debuted at #1" has had a "needs citation" note next to it for quite awhile now. I found a webpage that backs that up and was wondering if it could possibly be used as a source or I guess at least it could be listed on the external links section. I think the site is better than a couple of the external links on there now and seeing how this article lacks any other sources and cited references an additional external link could be merited. The site is http://www.eyeballson.com/jessica_simpson/ and regarding the "Dukes #1 Box-office statement see http://www.eyeballson.com/jessica_simpson/jessicasimpsoncareerinfo.htm Also the site has a funny Jessica lookalike contest that's unique.BHFeller 06:03, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New External Link
Hello, I would like to contribute this website to the external link list:
http://www.razzipapa.com/jessica_simpson
This site ranks Jessica’s celebrity status by monitoring her internet activity and news exposure. It takes values from many popular and reputable websites and news outlets. It looks like it generates a number like a stock price…then ranks her against other celebrities. A big part of Miss. Simpson’s story is her popularity. Although we know that critical acclaim doesn’t always follow popularity, it is a measure of her effect on popular culture. It’s also a measure of how easily she can get more work in Hollywood, and reach out to more people. In other words, this ranking doesn’t attest to her talent, but does give us an idea of her influence on our culture. The link is also encyclopedic because it gives us an idea of just how far she has come; from humble beginnings to A-list celebrity.
This information can’t be incorporated into the actual article because the ranking is dynamic and changes often, that’s why I’m recommending it for the External Link list.
To further demonstrate that this site meets the requirements of WP:EL and support my request, I would like to quote sections from the guideline and explain how each one applies to this site:
- Such pages could contain further research that is accurate and on-topic; information that could not be added...or other meaningful, relevant content that is not suitable for inclusion in an article.
The rating is dynamic, therefore can’t be incorporated into her article.
- From Restrictions on linking:
- Sites that violate the copyrights of others per contributors' rights and obligations should not be linked…
No copyright laws seem to be violated.
- Sites that match the spam blacklist without being whitelisted. Pages that contain such links cannot be saved.
I don’t think it’s been blacklisted as spam.
- What to link
- There are several things that should be considered when adding an external link.
- Is it accessible to the reader?
Yes, the website is easy to understand and accessible to the reader.
- Is it proper in the context of the article (useful, tasteful, informative, factual, etc.)?
Yes, as mentioned above…this link related directly to Miss. Simpson and is a testament to her celebrity status, or influence on popular culture.
- Is it a functional link, and likely to continue being a functional link?
The link seem to work. The site is hosted by Yahoo, a large and reputable company.
- What should be linked
- Sites that contain neutral and accurate material that cannot be integrated into the Wikipedia article due to copyright issues, amount of detail (such as professional athlete statistics, movie or television credits, interview transcripts, or online textbooks) or other reasons.
The site offers no point of view, and is completely natural. Its ranking is based on numbers and information from reputable websites. It can’t be integrated into the article because of the dynamic nature of the website.
- Sites with other meaningful, relevant content that is not suitable for inclusion in an article, such as reviews and interviews.
Again, it can’t be integrated into the article because of the dynamic nature of the website.
- Links to be considered
- Very large pages should be considered on a case-by-case basis. Worldwide, many use Wikipedia with a low-speed connection. Unusually large pages should be annotated as such.
The page is quite small and easily accessible to someone with a low speed internet connection
- Links normally to be avoided
- Any site that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a Featured article.
Again, it can’t be integrated into the article because of the dynamic nature of its contents.
- Any site that misleads the reader by use of factually inaccurate material or unverifiable research. See Wikipedia:Attribution#Reliable sources.
The raking is based on information and statistics from reputable and reliable websites as listed on the main page.
- Links mainly intended to promote a website.
I'm making this request because of it’s relevance to Miss Simpson, and the fact that it completes her story.
- Links to sites that primarily exist to sell products or services. For example, instead of linking to a commercial bookstore site, use the "ISBN" linking format, giving readers an opportunity to search a wide variety of free and non-free book sources.
No product or service is for sale.
- Links to sites with objectionable amounts of advertising.
There’s no objectionable advertising.
- Links to sites that require payment or registration to view the relevant content.
No payment is required to view this page.
- Sites that are inaccessible to a substantial number of users, such as sites that only work with a specific browser.
I tried this site on EI and Firefox; both work.
- Direct links to documents that require external applications (such as Flash or Java) to view the relevant content, unless the article is about such rich media. If you do link to such material make a note of what application is required.
This is a plain website.
- Links to search engine and aggregated results pages.
No
- Links to social networking sites (such as MySpace), discussion forums or USENET.
No
- Links to blogs and personal web pages, except those written by a recognized authority.
No
- Links to open wikis, except those with a substantial history of stability and a substantial number of editors.
No
- Sites that are only indirectly related to the article's subject: the link should be directly related to the subject of the article.
This link is directly related to Miss Simpson.
- Advertising and conflicts of interest
- You should avoid linking to a website that you own, maintain or represent, even if the guidelines otherwise imply that it should be linked.
I am not the owner of this website.
- A few parties now appear to have a spambot capable of spamming wikis from several different wiki engines, analogous to the submitter scripts for guestbooks and blogs.
I wouldn’t even know how to make a spambot!
- Sites requiring registration
- Sites that require registration or a paid subscription should be avoided because they are of limited use to most readers.
No registration is required.
- Foreign-language links
- English language links are strongly preferred in the English-language Wikipedia.
It’s in English!
- Redirection sites
- Do not use URL redirection sites in external links.
I’m not sure what this means.
- Rich media
- It is acceptable to link to pages rendered in normal HTML or plain text.
The site is in plain text.
- Avoid undue weight on particular points of view
The site offers not point of view whatsoever.
- Longevity of links
- It is very important to consider if the link is likely to remain relevant and acceptable to the article in the foreseeable future.
Ranking celebrities will always be relevant to Miss Simpson.

[edit] Bias and carelessness
I don't know if this page has been rewritten much, but it's the most sloppy, biased story I've come across. I've tried to polish some of the language, chopping completely out those bits that were bias alone and added no credible information, improving the syntax and punctuation, and in general making it read more like an encyclopedia article than an amateur hodgepodge of notes by teenage Jessica worshippers, edited by Jessica's publicist. The most offending parts were lame explanations of why Jessica goofed up her lyrics during a tribute program, or other apologetics that came straight out of press releases. The only fact that matters is that she changed her recording label, not that she decided to spin it as an attempt to get a "fresh start" following her divorce. Etc. The number of items I edited were lumped into one. It would have just taken much too long to do these one at a time. In fact, after reading halfway through the article and noting more errors and biased statements than I could keep track of, I started over and read the whole thing in edit mode so I could make changes as I went. She's an important pop culture figure and we need have a credible article about her. I hope others will contribute to making this article into more of a refernce resource and less of an apologia.
