[edit] Biography
[edit] Early Life
Mauboy was born to a father of Indonesian origin and a mother of Indigenous Australian, Native American and English descent.[1]
At the age of 14 won the Road to Tamworth talent search, the prize was a recording contract with Sony, she then recorded a Country version of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun".
This brought controversy during Idol, with certain media reports stating that already having a recording contract was against the rules of Idol, but Grundy Television said Mauboy's experiences in Tamworth had no bearing on her involvement in Australian Idol and that she no longer had a contract with Sony, allowing her to participate in the competition.
[edit] Australian Idol 2006
Jessica auditioned for Australian Idol in Alice Springs, with the support of her mother, and made it through to the Top 124 by singing Whitney Houston's hit, "I Have Nothing". She performed at the Kimberley Moon Experience, in Kununurra, to announce the news.
Mauboy went to Sydney to perform in solo and in group performances. She advanced from Group 2 with equal 32% of the vote along with Reigan Derry to advance to the finals of Australian Idol. On September 24, Jessica was given the first "touchdown" from judge Mark Holden of season 4 Idol, after her performance of Christina Aguilera's hit, "Beautiful". On October 1, she suffered a very sore throat, and almost was unable to perform that night. She performed Phil Colins hit "Another Day in Paradise" but holding back some of the high notes. She subsequently placed in the bottom 3 on October 2 but luckily escaped elimination. Jessica received her second "touchdown" for her rendition of "Words" by The Bee Gees on 29 October 2006.
Australian Idol 2006 allowed contestants to accompany themselves with instruments in the latter half of the competition. However Jessica decided not to play any instruments - her voice was considered her "instrument"; and Mark Holden agreed.During auditions Marcia stated that Jessica is one of the most natually blessed singers she has come across and she still remains as one of Australia's best found talent.
She was widely considered a favourite to win the competition. Much speculation was also made that she would win because of being in the middle of the top 12 group photo, as were the first three Australian Idol winners. On November 13, 2006, Mauboy was voted into the final 2, securing her a place in the Grand Final at the Sydney Opera House. On November 26, 2006, she was announced runner up with Damien Leith winning the title.

[edit] Post-Idol Career
[edit] 2007: The Journey, Joining the Young Divas and New Attitude
On December 10, 2006 it was announced that Mauboy had secured a recording contract with Sony BMG along with fellow idol, Dean Geyer. According to Denis Handlin, they will both have releases out mid 2007.[2] On December 24, Mauboy performed the songs "When a Child Is Born" and "All I Want For Christmas" at the annual Carols by Candlelight event in Melbourne.[3]
In mid-December, Jessica's version of "Night of My Life" was leaked online by a New Zealand website which released it legally for download, even though she did not win Australian Idol. The Reactor mix of the song has also leaked.
Mauboy released an album of all her Idol performances (similar to Australian Idol winner Damien Leith's The Winner's Journey) titled The Journey on February 24, 2007. It charted a week later at number four in the ARIA Albums Chart and received gold status.
She announced on Sydney's 104.1 2Day FM that she would be releasing a cover of the Christina Aguilera song "Beautiful" and was played for the first time on airwaves, even though it was the same version as what she sang on Australian Idol being only two minutes long.
On March 1, 2007 she appeared at her first post-Idol public performance, on Channel Seven's, Sunrise. She sang the song "Beautiful", different from the one she performed on Australian Idol. Mauboy also recorded the song 'Right Up Higher' as the opening theme of The Catch-Up, a daytime talk show on channel nine.
On the 26th of September 2007, Mauboy was introduced to the public as a new member of the Young Divas during an Australian Idol Top 12 performance in Federation Square, Melbourne. She replaced Ricki-Lee Coulter, who had featured on the group's first album but had then departed early in 2007 in order to concentrate on her solo career.
The new-look Young Divas released their first single "Turn Me Loose" on November 19th 2007, which debuted at #21 and peaked at #15. The second studio album and first with Mauboy, New Attitude was released on November 24th 2007 and debuted at #10. It has since achieved gold status.
Mauboy appeared on a television advertisement for 'Head & Shoulders' shampoo, which aired during Australian Idol commercial breaks on the 12th August 2007. One of Mauboy's songs from her upcoming debut solo studio album was used as background music, titled 'Do What You Do'.
On March 28, 2008, the Young Divas' record label, Sony BMG announced in The Daily Telegraph that due to the underperformance of Turn Me Loose, no second single would be released from New Attitude. However, it was also stated that the group were not being dropped from the record label's line-up of artists.[4]
As of April 2008, there is much doubt that she will ever release solo material, due to lack of updates from Sony BMG and Caplice Management.
