Jessamy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jessamy by Barbara Sleigh is a children's book that has a lot of history and a hint of science fiction.

The story is about an orphan called Jessamy who lives with one aunt during term and another during holidays. One holiday her Aunt's children have the measles so Jessamy has to live with a childless housekeeper.

Jessamy falls in love with the kind old woman and enjoys exploring the house with its many rooms. One day she discovers a cupboard, which has engraved in it her very uncommon name. She is puzzled by the name and cannot help but return to this cupboard just once more. She opens the door and falls asleep inside of the cupboard. When she wakes up and opens the cupboard door she discovers that she has travelled back to 1914, before the first world war.
