Although the immediate image source appears trustworthy, I am in fact not sure that this image is indeed PD. It all depends on how old the original source is.
If the original source was published before 1923, the image is at least {{PD-US}}.
Otherwise, if the original source was copyrighted in at least one EU country in 1995 (i.e., if the artist died 1925 or later), the old, expired, 50-year UK copyright would have been revived in 1995. See Directive 93/98/EEC. If so, the U.S. copyright on this work would have been restored in the U.S. by the URAA in 1996 (and that restored copyright would expire 95 years after the original publication). If the artist died less than 70 years ago, the image would even be copyrighted in the UK.
But as there are no indications either way, I'm ready to trust the immediate source for the time being. The copyright status of this work in the U.S. is unknown to me, though. (It was tagged {{PD-old-50}} by the original uploader.) Lupo 19:33, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
