[edit] Summary
Born June 9, 1976 in Minnesota, Jessica Svoboda is the founder and visionary behind SVOBODA. She has been plus size her entire life and always felt the clothes available to her did not reflect her lifestyle. Jessica set out to provide hip, fashion forward clothing for young, active, curvaceous women like herself. In 1998, Jessica enrolled in classes at the Los Angeles campus of the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising where she earned her associates degree in apparel manufacturing while working full time at an advertising agency. Jessica founded SVOBODA in January 2004. Although she had no fashion industry experience or contacts, she was armed with a lifetime of personal experience and a deep seeded belief that every body, regardless of size, is beautiful and worthy of fashionable clothing options. SVOBODA was one of the first companies to bring premium denim to the plus size market. By providing jeans of the moment designed to fit and balance the curves of a shapely wearer, SVOBODA quickly gained a cult following that attracted the attention of large retail clients worldwide. The line has since expanded into knitwear and leather goods. The primary sales drivers are fashion, fit and philosophy. Jessica knew what many designers still fail to understand today: “The cultural connotation of the term plus size is so outdated it prevents innovation in the sector, fashion forward women aren’t willing to pay for the same old same old, which then perpetuates the myth that plus size women don’t want designer clothes.” Since day one, Jessica has set out to redefine the image of plus size women within society, the fashion industry and the women themselves. Jessica believes fashion allows women to feel good when they know they look good, so that they can get on with the more important things in life. She says, “We can use each day to see everything that we are, dream of everything we want to become and enjoy the journey; or we can use this day to focus on the one thing we aren’t - thin.”
SVOBODA has been covered on national television programs like Entertainment Tonight, ABC’s Good Morning America, NBC’s Today, as well as within local, national and international publications. Kristine Svoboda, Jessica’s sister, recently joined SVOBODA. Together, they plan to develop SVOBODA into the premier plus size lifestyle brand.
A Minnesota native, Jessica holds a communications degree from Purdue University. She is an avid hiker, backpacker, snowboarder, and she loves to travel and socialize.
