1882-3.—MR. ROBERT EADON LEADER (Sheffield Independent) belongs to a line of journalists extending to four generations. He was born in 1839, and was educated at a private school in Sheffield, and at New College, London. After taking his degree at the London University in 1858, he joined the reporting staff of the Independent, and served in that capacity until in October, 1861, when he became attached to the editorial staff. Subsequently the entire management and editorship of the paper passed into the hands of Mr. Leader and his elder brother, Mr. J. D. Leader. Mr. Leader has taken an active part in the political movements of his native town. He was one of the founders of the Sheffield Junior Liberal Association, and of the Sheffield Parliamentary Debating Society. During his presidency, the efforts of the Society were directed towards obtaining a modification of the maximum scale of expenditure in the Corrupt Practices Bill of Sir Henry James, and Mr. Leader, in an ably written pamphlet, adduced some powerful arguments in support of the views entertained by the press with regard to the invidious scheduling of advertising and printing as forms of bribery. Mr. Leader was placed upon the committee of management of the Press Association in 1883, and is still a member of that body.
