Jersey Avenue is a New Jersey Transit station on the Northeast Corridor Line, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. It is located on Jersey Avenue in an industrial area adjacent to a New Jersey Transit rail yard. Certain rush hour trains originate or have their southern terminus at Jersey Avenue. Most passengers who use the station are weekday commuters to Newark or New York City. As a result, there is no weekend service at the station.

No northbound trains stop at Jersey Avenue; in order to ride to Newark or New York City, passengers must take a train which originates at Jersey Avenue. While some southbound trains terminate at Jersey Avenue,[1] many others stop at the low platform on the main Northeast Corridor Line. Passengers getting off a train that stops at this low platform must use an end door towards the front of the train where conductors are posted.

Local trains are scheduled to take about an hour to travel from here to New York City. Some express trains can take as little as 43 minutes and 10-15 minute delays can happen during the morning commute.

[edit] Commuting costs

Train passes to NYC are $289/month or $65.75/week. Off-peak roundtrips to NYC are $16, and one-way rides are $10.50 ($21 roundtrip for peak travel). Costs are somewhat less from Jersey Avenue to Newark, NJ.

[edit] Parking

The New Brunswick Parking Authority manages the parking lot at Jersey Avenue. Parking costs $150/quarter as of January 1, 2007. There is currently a waiting list of 10 months.[2] Daily parking is available in the white numbered spaces at the rear of the overflow lot for $5.00/day (plus 35 cents for the 7% parking tax imposed in late 2006, for a total of $5.35, which can be conveniently rounded up to $5.50, as the payment machines don't give change). Spaces in private lots adjacent to the station are available for $75-$100 per month.
